The Next FivePosted Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 6:43 AM
Living in the country is way better than I ever really expected. I love taking the dog for a walk in the windbreak and scaring up pheasants and quail. Listening to the turkeys along Medicine Creek on a quiet morning is something city folk never get to hear. We've had flocks of Sand Hills Cranes fly overhead with only the sound of their beating wings to announce their presence. Coyotes, raptors, deer, racoons, and even a marsupial or two (opossum) have graced our yard.
Yep... deciding to live in the country was the right decision for us, but there have been plenty of bumps along the way too. Our house and farmstead has been full of surprises, and those of you familiar with Murphy, the guy that Murphy's Law is named for, probably have figured out by now that he lives here on road 409. My war with the weeds has been pretty well documented along the way, and we've accomplished pretty much everything on our 5 year plan that we started out with.
We've made big changes to the farm. We've slashed and burned weeds, we dug up old artifacts (buried junk), cut trees, renovated the house, and saved the barn. We know more people than we knew when we lived in the city, and we're still stangers to most of the folks in town.
Along the way I managed to write a few hundred hundred blog articles here on the Gazette. Most were about sharing our thoughts about the transformation from city to rural living. I of course had to stick my nose in some controversial issues though, and those of you that disagreed with me I appreciate your position... even if you are wrong (IMHO). Just kiddin', but I think everybody learns things with a good discussion, I know I always do.
All in all, it's been a great 5 years, but now it's past time for the next 5 year plan. I haven't even thought about it though as it's just too much work. Kinda thinking like Congress I guess. But of course, isn't the end of the world occuring soon? Seems I read something about the Mayan's recently, but world events seem to point to some other prophecy events that seems much more likely to occur in the not too distant future...
Please!!!!! Don't forget the reason for the season, and keep Christ in Christmas!
