Pester Power and The Reason

Posted Monday, November 29, 2010, at 7:38 AM

Yikes... it's that time of year that brings out advertising for everything from cars to "pets" made out of pottery and plants. There is every kind of electronic gizmo available advertised, as well as cars, jewelery, watches, clothing, trips, restaurants, artificial and live trees, perfume, handbags, and few thousand other items I could spend the rest of the day trying to catalog.

A recent trip to Colorado Territory reminds me of how commercialized Christmas has become. Virtually every store is decorated to the max, parking lots are filled to capacity starting at 3AM in many cases, and the line of kids to tell Santa what is on their long list of present wishes is also long.

I remember being a kid. Pester mom and dad enough and you just might get what you want. Today I'm sure things are just about the same, but the list of things to pester about is considerably longer than I recall. And of course, the manufacturers do everything possible to make their product the most desirable of the bunch. Not only that, kids want very specific things. It's gotta be the latest and greatest whatever it is that every other kid wants.

Mega bucks are spent on holiday advertising. Our economies health will be judged by how much money is spent this shopping season, and soon after Christmas there will be piles of stuff that gets little if any use by anyone ever. Much of it ends up being "re-gifted", in the dump or at the second hand store with little thought about what went into making it, by whom, or why it was purchased in the first place.

Which brings me to the reason for today's blog... It is the reason for the season that gets lost for many. This Christmas, try and spend some extra time with God celebrating the birth of Jesus instead of spending that time trying to find the "perfect" gift at the store.

When you think about it, the perfect gift has already been given to you and yours if you will accept Him.

Jesus, as always, the Perfect Gift, to self. Nothing but personal Repentance, and the Gift of Salvation through Forgiveness, by Jesus, accomplishes Rebirth in Him, plus Eternal promise of Joy beyond imagination. AMEN

Keep the Watch, watching for the one who Watches over us, one and all.
