Behind The Curve

Posted Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 9:01 AM

An Internet search finds the phrase "ahead of the curve" defined: "Similar to ahead of the pack, ahead of the curve literally refers to your position on the statistical bell curve, where the top of the curve represents the median, average result. By being ahead of the curve you represent the top percentile of results that either has the advanced skills or understanding that sets you apart." http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/id...

OK, with that in mind, the following statistic puts me way behind the curve... the average teenager sends 92 text messages a day. First I'm past the teen part by too many years to count it seems anymore, and I've never sent a phone text message to anybody. For that matter, I'm pretty sure our cell phone has the capability to take pictures, but I couldn't do it if my life depended on it. Well, maybe if it was that important I could figure it out.

Another place I'm apparantly behind the curve is watching internet video. One source says the average internet user in the US of A watches 182 on line videos a month. http://royal.pingdom.com/2010/01/22/inte.... I'm not close, though I'm not nearly as far behind the curve on this one.

Another place I'm behind the curve is cell phone use. One source says the average cell phone is used 400 minutes a month. I can count on one hand how many minutes I've spent on the cell phone in the last month... I've got a lot of catchin' up do to do. Margie on the other hand does use the cell phone some in our house, but she is behind the curve by a bunch too.

Still, the following video proves that being old doesn't necessarily mean being slow...

I'd expect to see the number of phone minutes used per month go up as more people drop the landline and go cell phone only.

Boy Scouts has been the best place to do that Guillermo. Morse Code is an excellent communication skill to have, but chances are no one would expend the energy necessary to learn to the speed these guys were sending (apx 30-35 wpm).

Oh, the young guy said he 'texted' 165 'words' in 58 seconds, but I believe he meant 165 characters, which would be about 33 wpm.

But who's counting? (^8 (smile)
