Rights Are Rights

Posted Thursday, February 18, 2010, at 9:34 AM

You know what rights are right?

There are a lot of rights out there...

Human Rights
Animal Rights
Personal Rights
Property Rights
Civil Rights
Water Rights
Right of Life (Hotly debated?!)
Positive Rights
Negative Rights
Intellectual Property Rights
And in the USA of course, is the Bill of Rights.

Yale's online definition of rights are: Powers or privileges granted by an agreement or law. That sums it up pretty well don't you think?

What brings the above to mind is a poll result about the recent Supreme Court decision that allows corporations, unions, and seemingly any group to spend as much money as they wish for political advertising. The poll showed that by a wide margin, Americans don't like the decision ... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con...

Well at last! Something we Americans can agree about... mostly at least. It concerns me that corporations are afforded the same rights as private citizens. I think most of us would say that there is too much influence peddling in Washington already, so what do you suppose is going to happen when anyone can actually spend as much advertising revenue as they want for the candidate of their choice? We already know that political advertising works, so as far as I'm concerned, the decision hands over whoever has and is supported by the most money, their election victory.

I'm with the other 3 out of 4 poll respondents and hope congress passes some legislation that limits the amount of special interest funding permitted. Corporate, union, and all special interest campaign funding creates a conflict of interest for someone.

I agree. Most people feel disenfranchized the way it is now. My vote wont count for much anymore.
