Healthy Choices

Posted Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at 12:25 PM

It's funny how my day works out now and then. I decided I was going to write a major blog about heath care with facts and figures and my personal perspective on the health care debate. I spent hours on the blog, drove to town for information from the hospital, and interjected a couple of my own ideas that I hope to hear from President Obama tonight when he speaks to Congress.

Just as I was about to hit save, up on the screen pops... "Internet Explorer has experienced an unexpected error and must close now". So my mornings work went down the electronic bit bucket and I've started over.

Probably a good thing. All that work might have been good for me to think about, but it may have little to do with how you think about health care. The fact that over 10% of Nebraska children and adults in our area don't have health insurance is troubling to me and it should be to you. Why? Because when the uninsured go to the ER for care (which by federal law can't be denied), we end up paying the bill either in higher health care insurance premiums or higher taxes.

Here is the deal...

The only real power you have with health care is in Washington DC in the hands of the folks we elected to represent us. Let's make them do that by letting them know how we feel. Maybe you think there isn't any health care problem and if that be the case, you should let your congressional reps know.

Maybe you think some reform is needed, but you absolutely don't want a "public option"... let 'em know.

If you listen to President Obama's address to Congress tonight and you like some things and not others, let 'em know. If you have an idea of your own... let 'em know.

This is no time to be apathetic about the debate... something is likely to happen and having your voice heard by the folks making the decisions for us is important.

This is the most sane post about health care on this site. Thanks Brian.

That's unfortunate Brian. In the midst of working on my last blog, I was typing on Google Docs when my Internet Explorer window crashed. If not for Google constantly saving my work, I would have been in a similar situation.

The points you make above are fantastic. Now isn't the time for apathy or message board politics. People need to speak their mind to those who represent them.

Good work, sir.
