Pledge This!Posted Thursday, July 2, 2009, at 2:23 PM
With the July 4th celebrations about to get underway around the country, I thought I'd look into the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and got quite the surprise from what I saw. The above picture is of students performing the "Bellamy salute, " in 1941 while stating the Pledge of Allegiance. What makes this so interesting to me is that though the salute bearing his name was dropped for being too similar to the Nazi salute, he is also the guy that authored the first version of the Pledge of Allegiance. A short history of the pledge is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_A... Many of you will be traveling this holiday weekend, spending time on the lake, or just taking it easy. Please don't forget our troops performing their duty in near and far away lands. The sacrifice they make for our country and our way of life can never be overstated. All I can say is Thank You! And to wrap up my Independence Day blog, I hope you have a safe and happy Independence Day and offer the words of the Duke...

I remember when they changed to arm extended flag salute during the Pledge at school, to Hand Over Heart, because of the Nazi salute.
Many students wanted to know why the Nazis shouldn't change their salute, since ours was first by about a century.
