When I went to Omaha's Benson High, we had a marching band and a pep band that attended the schools sporting contests, and we were pretty good too. I recall 8 steps for ever 5 yards on the football field, and if everybody remembered their assignment, I bet it looked pretty cool with nearly 200 band members playing and struttin' in those green and white uniforms. The pep band was always at basketball games, but I don't recall ever going to a baseball game with the band.
Yep, high school sports and music seemed to go together in Omaha... not so much at my Denver area school. My high school in Colorado territory had band, but our focus was more on concerts, and our jazz band won competitions and traveled around the area including colleges to show off our talents. We even cut a record that sold out. I'm not sure how many copies were pressed, but we were pretty good.
Here in Cambridge, the schools band at football games is pretty good. Their numbers are few, but they really showed me something with their final performance during football playoffs with how much they improved over the course of the season. It's nice to see high school music programs still exist in an era where many school programs such as music get dumped due to budgetary cuts in the cities.
Half time marching band presentations during football season are still big deals in college to be sure, and even basketball is getting into the act with some interesting things going on. If you have a high speed internet connection, I think you will enjoy the half time show at Omaha Creighton University durng one of their basketball games. It is a performance like none I've seen before!
