Ancient History

Me & Mom At Sign Forest - Watson Lake, Yukon 2006
On this date in ancient history, my mother was born. I'll call it ancient history to let you know she's getting up there in years without divulging just how many ticks on the calendar have gone by. She was born in Holt County Nebraska to German immigrants, grew up in Ewing, was 1st chair trombone in the high school band, went to Grand Island Business College, worked in the War Department during WWII, got married to Dad and we lived happily ever after.

In the olden days... most city kids moms got to stay at home and we were no exception. Dad's work had him traveling weekly, and Mom and I went out to eat fairly often it seemed to me. I especially remember a few places, like the drug store with the lunch counter soda fountain with probably the best hamburgers I've ever had with a cherry Coke, the Walgreen's cafe with the thin T-bone steaks and french fries, and the first McDonald's in Omaha where we also got the first dent in the old '48 Plymouth when Mom didn't see the sign post and crinkled a fender a bit.

I was lucky as my folks loved to travel, and we went from the Canadian Rocky's to Mexico and east to Washington DC on different trips. Mom helped me learn about nature and the outdoors, and generally kept things in the house going smoothly. She's always there every time I've needed anything, and I'm pretty sure she was resolved she would outlive me when I was really sick after radiation therapy... glad I fooled her! She was always supportive and I couldn't possibly ask for better person to be my Mom.

So on your birthday Mom, I just want to say thanks for everything you have done, and continue to do for us. Happy Birthday! Your loving son... Brian
