All Joking Aside

Posted Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 7:34 AM

Living on the farm has been wonderful as far as we're concerned. Living away from the hustle and bustle of a city or even small town is exactly what we were looking for when we moved to southwestern Nebraska, and we found it! Sure there are some things that would be nice to have a bit more handy, but it seems there is a trade-off for everything, and a little inconvenience is well worth it.

One thing that few of us give much thought to is fire. We've all seen news video of a house completely engulfed in flames, but that happens to someone else right? I know the reality of a fire at the farm, and it's not good. By the time the volunteer fire department can mobilize and make it the few miles from town to our place, everything likely would be lost.

I believe fire was a major consideration for previous owners of the farm as there are 2 sets of stairs into the basement. Unfortunately, serious injuries are often the result of a house fire, and some of those injuries could probably have been prevented. Fire safety and prevention is no joke, and I hope you will take the time to watch the video associated with the following link. It may save you in many ways.

I think that if a person were to check with the Fire Marshal, one would find out that most rural building fires are caused by 'half-fast' wiring. Stupidity comes in a close second, but that too is only a guess. Thanks for addressing the hazard.
