Customer Service Part 2

Soap box time - customer service is a vital part of any business. Now I will say - having been in this "business" for years - I can tell the difference between someone actually trying to have good customer service to someone who doesn't give a rats butt if they provide you with decent service or not. This isn't an all inclusive list - just the stuff that has ticked me off in recent months.

Customer Service is NOT:

Lying to your customers - example - Your dress order is not here because they are behind because of the Chinese New Year. Get real - face the fact in your two person bridal shop operation one of you DID NOT PLACE THE ORDER. Orders are not double checked. But you danged good and well took the money up front... hmm Then you get ticked when it is disputed.. Hmm. Get an accountant - seriously.

Accusing the customer for your screw up - A recent example of this - Having a date and time set up months in advance for multiple hair appointments - and then calling the appointee ONE week prior to needing your service to say you can't do the appointment as arranged MONTHS ahead and instead of TRYING to do anything - you put it back on the customer who had arranged months before AND HAD double checked and whose parents had PAID the deposit plus some two months in advance. Okay - lousy, lousy treatment and service.

Hiring bullies for management positions and then pushing the issues the bully creates off on the long time employees because they supposedly don't like change. These bullies are the worst because they hide behind a title. They don't have a clue how to do their jobs and use intimidation, lying and fabrication of issues to make themselves look good. Usually these are the good old boys who have social or behind the scenes business deals with "connections" with the upper management. I call these bullies the maggots of Corn Field politics. (Okay copyright that last sentence.)

Ignoring the woman when trying to do business and actually saying - well unless you have your husband's permission, I am afraid I can't sign you up for our service. Okay - now this stuff ruffles the fluff on my bloomers. If I am of legal age - married or not - and have ovaries DO NOT tell me I have to have ANYONE'S permission to do anything. Yes - that actually happened within the last few years to me and I recently had a younger woman friend get that treatment as well. That needs to stop. Seriously.

"Ignoring the woman" has been a pet peeve of mine for years. I don't know how many times when we were farming that someone insisted they had to talk to my husband, only to be told when I finally got him to the phone, "You need to talk to my wife about that. She handles all of that."

Add to that the number of times my ideas were ignored until I convinced someone of the male persuasion to present them and then saw them implemented or at least treated with respect. I learned that when it was really important it was far simpler to get a male to suggest the idea in the first place so it would go through quickly.

I agree, Betsy. Another of my customer service pet peeves is when sales clerks bad mouth other customers in front of me. It makes me wonder what they say about me when I leave.

Vent anytime. :)
