That's My Boy!Posted Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 7:32 PM
That's My Boy is the latest Adam Sandler flick and this one co-stars Andy Samberg. Sandler plays Donny who fathers a son (Samberg) while still in High School and raises him as a single parent until his 18th birthday. The story picks up when Donny tries to reunite with his son on the eve of his wedding.
Sandler has had a recent string of bad films after a remarkable stretch of huge hits starting way back in 1995. Most notably, his previous film - Jack and Jill. While most people absolutely hated Jack and Jill and 99% of critics all agreed that it was garbage - I managed to find it slightly entertaining and not as bad as it was made out to be. Then, That's My Boy started to get advertised and I was mildly interested in what was in store with both Sandler and Samberg sharing the screen in what seemed like a sure-fire hit. Then, negative reviews starting pouring in and bad box-office openings and it seemed liked this one was destined to be another misfire from Sandler.
I was still excited to watch it, as a fan of Sandler since 1995 and his amazing films like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. I've at least enjoyed watching all of them so far - but this one kind of goes the wrong direction.
I did still mildly enjoy the film and if your a fan of Sandler - its still worth going to see, but it is definitely the worst of his career in my opinion. It has a strung together story that features long and useless gag sequences that are completely unnecessary to the story and even worse - they aren't that funny. I think the R rating that they obviously were going for was the first mistake. Sandler is much better in the PG and PG-13 realm of comedy and should probably stick to that. He seems out of place and never becomes likable so that the audience cheers for him to actually reconnect with his long lost son. On top of that, Samberg and Sandler manage to have no chemistry on screen. It would have made for quite the epic movie for those two to combine forces and make a hilarious flick but it turned into a very sad effort.
That's My Boy is not a recommended flick except for the die-hard Sandler fans.
