Black Friday

Posted Friday, November 20, 2009, at 2:59 AM

After a grueling 2 day session -- Tanner Lytle and myself finished the Game On Black Friday Insert. Tanner managed to do most of the 'heavy' lifting by doing the main design work while I dealt with the overall specials/printing issues and organization. If you like how it looks, let us know -- we'd love to hear it. It feels good to be done and there is a huge amount of anticipation to show this ad of 'AMAZINGNESS' to all of you. It's a completely different feeling for Black Friday when you are on the other side of it. Only 3 years ago, I was always excited to see the newest flyers for Black Friday leak with extremely low prices. I used to shred past all the pages of clothes and useless garbage to the most important parts like electronics. I was thrilled to death when a popular item was going to be on sale at a remarkably lower price than ever before. Being on the opposite side now for the 3rd year has opened my eyes to how much more exciting it is to plan the specials. Over the past two years, Game On has had some pretty spectacular sales that actually seem rather dull today. Do you remember the days where finding a Wii meant you'd make over $500 bucks on EBAY? Now, we've got ultra low priced bundles stocked on a regular basis. Our first year, we had some XBOX360 consoles that sold for $300 -- $400 that after just 2 short years, would sell between $150 and $25o. But, at the time -- the specials we had on the products in stock were awesome deals. Funny how a small amount of time changes that pretty dramatically.

This year, we took a new approach to planning specials. We looked at what other stores were doing. Thankfully, the big stores have a hard time keeping secrets and the flyers come out as early as September -- October. We have the ability to scope out some of these specials and see what we can offer that is the same or better. We like to think that we manage to do better most of the time. This year, we took some items that we never thought we'd mark down and found a way to sell them at some pretty remarkable prices that we've never put them at before. It's very entertaining to me to put these together and plan out some specials for people to get excited about like I used to get excited about the flyers I saw. It's a rewarding experience to see people happy about the special low pricing.

Needless to say -- I'm very enthused to get this flyer into the public's hands, but you will have to wait till Tuesday when it comes out in the McCook Daily Gazette or you can stop by the store and pick one up on Tuesday as well. To give a quick preview of the ad -- let me just say that we are planning to be giving away a product valued at $13.49 MSRP to every family that purchases over $15 worth of stuff in the store on the morning of the 27th. That's just one of the many specials on almost everything in the store!

So what are your black friday memories? What do you look forward to the most? My favorite black friday memory is not going to sleep the night before and standing in line for well over 4 hours to get a great deal on a laptop. It was the most useless piece of crap laptop I have ever bought in my life. It was great for getting on the internet and typing blogs -- but couldn't handle much of anything else. Upgrading it was nearly impossible and the system barely saw any use before I purchased another one that could actually function properly. So why is that my favorite black friday memory? Because it taught me a lesson to not just buy something because it was a great deal. It's always good to have a reason and a high quality assurance before giving in to price. I still look forward to the most amazing deals but now I give them a good check-over before I just snatch it up.

So how about one last special from the Game On ad? The board game Colosseum from Days of Wonder usually retails for $59.99 but on the morning of the 27th -- Game On will have it at only $29.99 for a savings of $30! This is an awesome deal on an amazing game that just happens to be of the highest quality, so if you're looking for a new board game, don't skip out on this wonderful title!

I don't know about you, but after Thanksgiving dinner, I'm going to sleep as soon as possible so I'm ready to go in the morning for the biggest shopping day of the year -- Black Friday.
