Watchmen and CoralinePosted Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 11:45 AM
Being a comic book shop owner, this week was pretty good for new releases since both Coraline and Watchmen are essentially rooted in the comic book world with Watchmen being one of Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels of all time. That's quite an accomplishment for a 'comic' book.
First up - Watchmen I originally reviewed this film in theatres and the review sticks on DVD. The added footage for the 'Director's Cut' is nice but not really necessary to add more time to an already extended movie. Watchmen is a good flick and worth watching if you haven't already had the chance. Read the original review at http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/15091....
Coraline It's a weird flick and since I didn't read the graphic novel it was based on - I only have the film to base my opinion on. I enjoyed it but not enough to watch it again or really recommend it. It's a film that is technically marvelous to view especially some of the 3D effects, however they lose their sparkle when the story tends to bore. Coraline is a small girl who moves with her family to a new location where she finds a small door to an alternate reality that mirrors her own life but BETTER - only everybody she knows now has buttons for eyes. At first, this alternate reality is WAY better than the real world, but soon she realizes that is not the case and has to use her brain and skills to escape and get back to the real world. I was completely impressed with the stop-motion animation used and how well it was put together, but the story just didn't do enough to keep me entertained once the amazement with the animation stopped. Coraline is a bit dark for the little ones and a bit too boring for the older ones which leaves it at a very hard spot to recommend. It's neat to see and worth a watch, but don't expect spectacularness. Yes, I'm pretty sure that is not a word.
That's it for this week. Next week, we've got Dragonball, Fast & Furious, and Miss March. |
