Not a lot of movies released this week.

Australia

Watched it in theatres, and my review sticks. I enjoyed it the second time on DVD and would recommend a viewing for those who missed it in theatres. Original review can be found at http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/14858...

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

I purposely missed this flick in theatres and without anything else to watch this week, I took Dora out of the DVD player and made my little one sit down and watch this with me. I was not impressed. She didn't pay attention very much, but after I took it back, she constantly wanted to watch that 'chihuahuahua' movie. (yes, I know it is spelled wrong - can you guess why?) This movie made over $100 million dollars at the box office and was a surprise hit with only around 20 million invested in making it. The basic story is not really the draw of this flick - its the dogs. So, if you want to watch a movie about dogs talking, this is it. If not, avoid it.

There are a few other very minor releases coming out this week but none worth mentioning. Next week we have a return to something more event filled with Milk, Rachel Getting Married, Role Models, and Cadillac Records.

As a papillon owner and lover, I feel the chihuahua love in America is silly. Sure, their small, adorable, have big ears and eyes, and sometimes lack hair, but papillons have all that, and they have better-looking fur! They're much better than the naked mole rats of dogdom.

But then, I really have no interest in Beverly Hills Chihuahua regardless of their choice of dogs. No offense to the subgenre, but the last talking dog movie I've loved was the Homeward Bound movies (although I did enjoy the original, non-talking The Incredible Journey as well). Those were just adorable.
