Sex Drive, What Just Happened, and the Haunting of Molly HartleyPosted Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 11:02 AM
So, there's really not a lot released this week. I managed to watch only one of the three 'big' titles.
Sex Drive This is a movie that was made to have fun. It would appear that the screenwriter and director had a great time making the flick and that shows in the unrated - just for fans edition. In that edition, they have zany antics that really don't even fit into the movie - matter of fact, the director warns everyone before they watch it to 'go back and watch the rated standard version first.' And he means it. Sex Drive is the dysfunctional tale of three friends who end up making a road trip to meet a girl that one of them met on the internet. It's not too original but has some nice jokes in it. I found myself somewhat bored in many parts but some of the jokes were quite hilarious. I would gladly pay to watch James Marsden in another comedy like this as he was excellent. Overall, if you liked Superbad, American Pie, and these types of movies, you'll probably like Sex Drive, even though it is inferior to its counterparts.
What Just Happened It's billed as a comedy-drama and stars Robert Deniro, Stanley Tucci, Sean Penn, Bruce Willis and more. It is also directed by Barry Levinson. All big names, all couldn't convince me to even give this a try. It looks like crap. Standard description of flick follows if you think it might be your cup of tea. A winningly sharp comedy about two nail-biting, back-stabbing, roller-coaster weeks in the world of a middle-aged Hollywood producer.
The Haunting of Molly Hartley Molly Hartley (Bennett) hopes that with her mother locked away in a mental ward, she can forget the violence of her family's past and start over. She has found a new life, a new school and a new boyfriend (Crawford). But when her secret past and haunting nightmares continue, Molly fears she has inherited her mother's psychosis. What she doesn't know is that she's inherited something else... a secret far more horrifying than any fate she can imagine and a destiny she cannot avoid! So - I didn't watch this one. It's been an off-week as these movies did not appeal to me at all.
There are a couple other releases this week and the next most high-profile is a big-budget release from the pornography industry that they managed to tame down enough to get an R rating - the flick is called Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge and is a sequel to a similiar outing called Pirates a couple years ago that they tamed down to get an R rating and was a huge hit at rental. This one should be a big hit as well if you liked the first one - or if you have even heard of this.
All flicks are available at Movie Gallery and next week, we've got some better releases like Australia. |
