Tokyo Gore Police - Interested? Jump in.Posted Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at 10:51 AM
Getting back into the swing of things this week with my post only one day late. I apologize, but I had to take an extra night to watch Tokyo Gore Police. We'll get to that later.
The contest still rages on, but unfortunately no winners from last week. I think we will start setting up a question to answer in the comments and from all that get it right will be entered into the contest. What do you think? Should we switch from just simple comments about anything to answering a question? Whatever option gets the most votes in the comments this week, will be the one we try next week.
I watched this western in theatres and really enjoyed it. Well worth watching again on DVD. Check out the original review at http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/14786...
My Best Friend's Girl
This flick is your typical gross out sex comedy. They do anything and everything to shock you with what they say and do while the main character falls for the one girl he shouldn't, which puts the 'sweet' center in the film. The 'sweet' center seems to be a running theme in comedies these days and has worked well for comedies like 'The 40 Year Old Virgin,' but is overplayed in this somewhat lackluster film. I was actually amazed this was out on DVD, thinking I had just seen the trailer not too long ago that it was coming out in theatres. A quick check says it did indeed come out in theatres in September, but only made a quick $19 million before disappearing. So - if your fan of comedies with some shock value, this is a good choice if you don't want to rewatch Knocked Up, Superbad, American Pie or 40 Year Old Virgin.
This was a costly dud in theatres, but is surprisingly well made if not too long. Heck, this movie made less than My Best Friend's Girl and was budgeted much higher - making this a bigger loser, even if it's a much better movie. Swing Vote is about a guy who just gets by in life but loves his daughter that he raises by himself very much. She is extremely smart and very interested in the political system and urges her father to vote on election day. He fails at doing this, but she manages to sneak in to place his vote, but not before the election machines power goes out. This causes his vote not to count although it was counted, making him a swing voter. The election is so close that it actually comes down to who he votes for to win the election. The craziness ensues. Even though this is a political comedy, it focuses on the relationships of the father and daughter which brings out the best parts. Kevin Costner is plays dad and does a great job as always. In case your reading this and haven't seen The Postman, go rent it. Anyways, Costner is excellent, the direction is decent, and the story is interesting enough to watch for the extra long run time of more than 2 hours.
Tokyo Gore Police
This is what you've all been waiting for right? Right? Well, Movie Gallery only received one copy of this independant gem straight from overseas so you'll have to be the first there. It has been dubbed in English so you don't have to read subtitles although reading subtitles would probably make the movie better. This flick is straight up terrible. The premise is that in the future, people can make weapons out of wounds, so self-mutilation becomes popular as a 'fighting' method. It's a little weird and doesn't always make sense, but I think the idea was just to have as much blood splattering on the screen as possible. Mission Accomplished. This is a bloody mess and not to mention completely and totally terrible special effects so the blood doesn't even look real. This is a low budget movie that really is not worth watching unless you want to sit around with some buddies and laugh at the absolute weirdness.
And, the very last release I reviewed - Walker Texas Ranger: The Sixth Season - no review necessary - go rent Chuck Norris today!
That's it for this week - next time, we've got Max Payne, Igor, and The Express. We may also have Repo! if it gets released as promised.
