You Don't Mess with the Zohan and The Happening

This week, we have two flicks that for many reasons, I avoided at theatres. Actually, I ended up watching Zohan in theatres but was so disappointed by the flick, I refused to review it. The Happening was a film that got such terrible reviews and one of my friends watched it opening night and immediately called to tell me it was worthless. I now agree.

First up, the least of two evils, The Happening.

I don't even know how to review this flick without just telling you the craziness, which is sort of the only reason to possibly watch this, so I'll try not to give away the 'surprise' that M. Night Shyamalan (writer , director) is famous for in his previous flicks like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. So, The Happening is about a 'something' that starts happening in New York City and quickly spreads. This 'something' effects humans who end up trying to kill themselves in anyway possible. This is supposed to be scary by the music that cues up, but I couldn't help but laugh. There are some seriously weird things that are presented in such a matter of fact manner that its hard not to just shake your head and walk away. This movie tries to make sense and it does base its scientific evidence on real proven things, however - it's a little hard to get into. It's even harder to try to believe what's happening. Either way, the movie does at least plod along at a brisk pace and manages to continually throw new things at you to wonder at, that you can make it through the whole thing without shutting it off. I really don't like lead actor, Mark Wahlberg, in anything that he has ever been in, except The Departed. This is no exception and without his presence, I may have liked the movie a bit more, but not much. This is not a good movie. It may be worth a watch to just experience the weirdness, but overall, if you have another pick, you might just try that.

The worst, You Don't Mess With the Zohan.

First, it's an Adam Sandler flick so I was super hyped to see it. Second, it had a credit from super producer Judd Apatow of Knocked Up, Super Bad, and 40-Year Old Virgin fame attached to it. Third, did I mention I was a big Sandler fan? So, what went wrong? I'd say just about the entire flick. I really don't think I laughed at more than maybe one joke in the entire film. I even watched it another time, just to make sure I didn't miss the 'funny' the first time. I've known a few people to say they liked it or at least liked the first part of it, but overall, the general feeling from critics and audiences is that Zohan was stupid and I completely agree. Don't waste your time.

If you feel the need, both flicks are available at Movie Gallery starting Tuesday, the 7th.
