Over Her Dead Body, P.S. I Love You, First Sunday, Teeth

Posted Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 10:09 AM

First of all - I didn't watch any of these flicks this week. I was out of town and had no time to fit any of them in. So - below is a synopsis of each in case you were wondering about any of them.

Over Her Dead Body

Devastated when his fiancée Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) is killed on their wedding day, Henry (Paul Rudd) reluctantly agrees to consult a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) at the urging of his sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane). Despite his skepticism over her psychic abilities, Henry finds himself falling hard for Ashley, and vice versa. But there is a big snag. Ashley is being haunted by Kate's ghost, who considers it her heavenly duty to break up Henry and Ashley's fledgling romance, if it is the last thing she does on this earthly plane.

P.S. I Love You

Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is beautiful, smart, and married to the love of her life--a passionate, funny and impetuous Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler). So when Gerry's life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it's a good thing he planned ahead.

Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief but in rediscovering herself. The first message arrives on Holly's 30th birthday in the form of a cake and, to her utter shock, a tape recording from Gerry, who proceeds to order her to get out and "celebrate herself." In the weeks and months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way: P.S. I Love You.

Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and best friends, Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon), begin to worry that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but, in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future.

With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly embarks on a touching, exciting and often hilarious journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life.

First Sunday

In this hilarious comedy, Durell (ICE CUBE) and LeeJohn (TRACY MORGAN) are best friends and bumbling petty criminals. When told they have one week to pay a $17,000 debt or Durell will lose his son, they come up with a desperate scheme to rob their neighborhood church. Instead, they end up spending the night in the presence of the Lord and are forced to deal with much more than they bargained for.

Teeth

High school student Dawn works hard at suppressing her budding sexuality by being the local chastity group's most active participant. Her task is made even more difficult by her bad boy stepbrother Brad's increasingly provocative behavior at home. A stranger to her own body, innocent Dawn discovers she has a toothed vagina when she becomes the object of violence. As she struggles to comprehend her anatomical uniqueness, Dawn experiences both the pitfalls and the power of being a living example of the vagina dentata myth.

Not a whole lot of big releases this week, but come back next week when we get a few bigger releases like Mad Money and Untraceable. Both did terrible at the Box Office so we'll check them out on DVD and see if they really were terrible flicks.

I absolutely loved PS I Love You. So I looked up the person who wrote it (duh, I'm a writer). Her name is Cecelia Ahern and she was 21 when she wrote it. I'm really amazed that someone so young had so much life experience to write such a provoking story. The DVD even has an interview of her. I'm definately not loaning this one out. Get your own.
