Sunshine - Yuma - Dragon - SmileyfacePosted Monday, January 7, 2008, at 9:46 AM
So its Monday and time to post the movies that are coming out on Tuesday at the local Movie Gallery.
Sunshine is unfortunately not very original. I say this because it isn't. Danny Boyle is the director and previously did work on the zombie flick 28 Days. I enjoyed that movie and expected more from this one. However, it is your normal sci-fi movie. A group of astronauts are going out to the sun to try and blow it up. The reason, to make it shine again. You see, this is the near future and our sun is dying. To make it shine again, the team is going to take a huge bomb into the center of it and explode it into shining again. An interesting concept to say the least, but the whole thing goes straight into formula as things happen to the crew one by one. Disaster sinks in and the inevitable 'monster' shows up to wreck havoc on the mission. Crew eventually triumphs in their mission and the movie ends. The movie is well shot and very well acted. There is hardly a complaint on the whole production except that it is so much like all the other 'rescue' mission sci-fi movies. If I had never seen the many other flicks that came out over the past 20 years, this would be excellent! I definitely enjoyed watching the film and you could do way worse than this for a night of entertainment. Give it a shot if you like sci-fi thrillers as this is the best they get, even if you've seen it before.
The only non major box office release that I had time to watch this week was Smileyface. The box explains that the movie is like "Harold and Kumar," but with one white chick. Classy enough I suppose. Anywho, it has John Krasinski in it from The Office TV Series and I tend to enjoy watching Mr. Krasinski so I decided to give it a shot. It was at least funny in a few parts, but overall just kind of dragged on to the end. It is essentially a 'stoner' movie where the main character gets high and then proceeds to make bad decisions throughout the day that cause her great turmoil. It's good for a few laughs but not much else.
This one I reviewed in theaters and after watching it on DVD, I have not changed my opinions so, click on the link to go to the original review! http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/12809...

Another flick I reviewed in theaters and don't feel the need to change anything in the original review. Click through for more!
There are a few other new flicks released at Movie Gallery this week including Black Irish, which looks like an amazingly well made independent flick. Check them all out starting Tuesday January 8th.
