Movie Reviews for the First Week of 2008

Not a lot of new releases this week, but at least the two that were released are good flicks.

Resident Evil: Extinction

The third film in the Resident Evil Franchise is more of the same. The original form of Resident Evil is a video game from Capcom. The original game was a huge hit and has spawned many more games and other various merchandise. The first movie was a huge hit(dollar wise), even though it was a bit of a disappointment to Resident Evil game fans. Since it made the money, they made a sequel which also made money, so they made a third. Do you think they made money? Yes, but not nearly as much. And its hard to tell why when watching the film as it is very good when comparing to the other two movies. I enjoyed both the first and second Resident Evil movies and was looking forward to this one. It was much better paced and timed, the acting seemed to be more natural and the special effects continued to impress. I've heard many grumblings from video game fans that they don't like the movies, but I don't have any complaints that way. I enjoy the games and I enjoy the movies. If you haven't watched the first two, the third may be a bit hard to follow, and if you have watched the first two, this one is more of the same. The plot of the new flick centers on Alice who continues to fight the zombies while traveling across the country. She encounters a group of survivors and joins them. This one is worth checking out.

Shoot'em Up

I have been VERY EXCITED for the release of this flick. From the first time I saw the trailer to the eventual disappointment when our movie theater was unable to get a copy of the print, I have steadily looked forward to the day I would be able to watch this. The day came and the day was glorious. To be honest, I was so wrapped up in Christmas and dealing with the many issues that the holidays present for a downtown retail store that I completely forgot about this movie coming out. Matter of fact, I completely forgot about anything to do with movies, which is a rare occurrence for me. Anyways, I was snapped back to my usual mindset when Colby from Movie Gallery called and wondered why I hadn't been in. I immediately rejoiced and went in right away. The movie did not disappoint. The movie is about a guy who just happens to witness a guy trying to kill a pregnant woman. He reluctantly puts downs his coffee and saves the woman just in time. How does he save her you ask? Well, he stabs the carrot he was eating through the guys head. Weird? check. Unsettling? check. Amazing? check. From here, a whole gang of 'henchmen' break into the building trying to kill the woman. Our hero, known only as Mr. Smith, continues to fight them off with a gun while helping the pregnant woman give birth to the baby. He cuts the umbilical cord by shooting it and then another wave of bad guys come flooding in. Smith continues to fight and eventually the mother gets shot in the head and Smith starts to take off without the child. He goes back for the baby and escapes. He tries to dump the baby off and every time the henchmen show up and try to kill the child. Smith saves the baby and eventually takes the baby to a prostitute who recently lost a child so she can nurse the baby. From here the two continue to be hunted down through warehouses, airplanes, streets, the air, and eventually all of the henchmen are dead. The child is safe and the two end up taking care of the child. The movie's plot is not that big of a deal. It has one, but its really just there to string together the action scenes. This movie has tons of inventive action scenes that are not only good, but funny. It's really interesting to watch what happens next and has many 'WHAT THE HECK?' moments such as the death by carrot scene. There are so many ridiculous one liners that beg to be quoted. Not everyone will like this flick as it blends serious action with funny irrelevant humor. I enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend it.

As always, the movies are available at Movie Gallery. Tell them Cody sent ya.
