Over Her Dead Body, P.S. I Love You, First Sunday, Teeth
Posted Tuesday, May 6, at 10:09 AM
First of all - I didn't watch any of these flicks this week. I was out of town and had no time to fit any of them in. So - below is a synopsis of each in case you were wondering about any of them.
Over Her Dead Body Devastated when his fiancée Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) is killed on their wedding day, Henry (Paul Rudd) reluctantly agrees to consult a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) at the urging of his sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane). Despite his skepticism over her psychic abilities, Henry finds himself falling hard for Ashley, and vice versa. But there is a big snag. Ashley is being haunted by Kate's ghost, who considers it her heavenly duty to break up Henry and Ashley's fledgling romance, if it is the last thing she does on this earthly plane.
P.S. I Love You Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) is beautiful, smart, and married to the love of her life--a passionate, funny and impetuous Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler). So when Gerry's life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it's a good thing he planned ahead.
Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief but in rediscovering herself. The first message arrives on Holly's 30th birthday in the form of a cake and, to her utter shock, a tape recording from Gerry, who proceeds to order her to get out and "celebrate herself." In the weeks and months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way: P.S. I Love You.
Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and best friends, Denise (Lisa Kudrow) and Sharon (Gina Gershon), begin to worry that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but, in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future.
With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly embarks on a touching, exciting and often hilarious journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life.
First Sunday In this hilarious comedy, Durell (ICE CUBE) and LeeJohn (TRACY MORGAN) are best friends and bumbling petty criminals. When told they have one week to pay a $17,000 debt or Durell will lose his son, they come up with a desperate scheme to rob their neighborhood church. Instead, they end up spending the night in the presence of the Lord and are forced to deal with much more than they bargained for.
Teeth High school student Dawn works hard at suppressing her budding sexuality by being the local chastity group's most active participant. Her task is made even more difficult by her bad boy stepbrother Brad's increasingly provocative behavior at home. A stranger to her own body, innocent Dawn discovers she has a toothed vagina when she becomes the object of violence. As she struggles to comprehend her anatomical uniqueness, Dawn experiences both the pitfalls and the power of being a living example of the vagina dentata myth.
Not a whole lot of big releases this week, but come back next week when we get a few bigger releases like Mad Money and Untraceable. Both did terrible at the Box Office so we'll check them out on DVD and see if they really were terrible flicks.
The Golden Compass, 27 Dresses Another week, another batch of new movies. Let's get to it. The Golden Compass Such controversy surrounded this movie and it ended up doing decent but not great at the box office which had many people who were against the movie exclaiming joy, however, the flick did some good business overseas and is well on its way to being a profitable venture for New Line Cinema. ...
Charlie Wilson's War, Cloverfield, Orphanages, Savages Another big week of new releases hits the shelves at Movie Gallery! Charlie Wilson's War This was released in the awards season for films and managed to not get nominated for anything and was largely not seen in theaters. It did decent business, but nothing like what Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts can usually bring in for there movies. ...
Juno, AVP Requiem, The Final Season, In the Name of the King, and more A great week for new releases as there is a little something for everyone. Juno Reviewed it in theatres and my opinion stays the same. It's a great movie and well worth renting or even buying. Check out the original review here, http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1305724.html...
There Will Be Blood, Walk Hard, P2, & more! This Tuesday is full of new releases. Since I was somewhat struck with sickness, I only watched two of the recent releases, but they were excellent choices! There Will Be Blood This is a film by Paul Thomas Anderson, whose previous work includes Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love. ...
Sweeney Todd and the Chipmunks Although there are some random other independant new releases, the only two wide releases on DVD this week are Sweeney Todd and Alvin & the Chipmunks. First up, Sweeney. Officially, Sweeney Todd is a musical. The original show debuted awhile back on the stage and has made its way onto video a few times, but always as a taped version of the stage show. ...
The Kite Runner, Tripping the Rift, Sasquatch Gang... Well, this week is pretty bare for movie releases. The Kite Runner Being the only major release this week, I skipped it. It just didn't seem interesting to me, but nevertheless, the description follows. Based one on of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, The Kite Runner is a profoundly emotional tale of friendship, family, devastating mistakes and redeeming love. ...
I am Legend, Atonement, Enchanted, Southland Tales Another great week of movie releases on DVD! I am Legend Loved it in theatres and still love it on DVD. I was unable to watch the alternate ending that is included on the deluxe DVD, but I'll be ordering a copy of the deluxe DVD set so I can see it. Check out the original theatrical review at http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1298335.html...
