  • John Adams wasn't fond of the 4th of July, so the story goes, as he was convinced that the day for celebration should July 2nd.

Why not declare "Independence Day" the first Friday in July? Four times per decade it will be on the either the 2nd or the 4th...both days are arguable for the date of Independence. The other six years per decade we will have to trade a modicum of accuracy for a three-day weekend. Who's with me?

  • That type of thinking has been suggested, numerous times, Benevolus.

Today, the 'Independence' part of the remembrance, is buried beneath the 'date' (4th), but to slide the celebration to an annual-Friday, though stopping the use of '4th,' we would then be celebrating just another 'Long week-end,' based on the excuse: '...on some day, in the month of July, our four-fathers (error deliberate), signed a paper that caused us to live like we live, without asking anyone....').

Why not, simply, refuse to participate in celebrating an event, so important (to our way of life), we call it what the Fore-fathers called it, 'Independence Day,' and remember that we do that Patriotic event, on the Fourth day of July, every year, to honor the Free way of life, we have (slightly modified) today?

    Who's with me on that??

Thanks for your response. Maybe next year.

  • Would Independence Day cease to be Independence Day if it was celebrated on July 7th? Bear in mind that July 7th is the farthest from July 4th that the holiday could possibly be celebrated if it were scheduled on the first Friday of every July.

I am not sure, given the Founding Fathers' disagreement on the appropriate date, that July 4th is correct date for celebration anyway.

A final thought: Do we fail to "give thanks" on Thanksgiving if the number of the date changes?

  • Using you logic, Benevolus, it is possible that moving 'Independence day' to the 'First Friday' would be acceptable, about as acceptable as all people born in the month of July (or any other month), would celebrate all Birthdays on the 'First Friday,' of the Month in which each was born. That way, the Birthday cards, and such could better be planned for placement on the rack.

I'm not saying it 'can't be' altered, but I do ask, 'when do we stop adjusting tradition for modern convenience??' At some time, somewhere in the future, possibly, not so distant, the, then, 'We the People' may determine the day should be changed to the First Thursday, to facilitate a legitimate Four Day Weekend Off, since, in their rational, Friday would not be productive, any-way, saddled between three OFF days.

I guess you can call me, one of those 'old-guys,' who believes, those other 'old-guys' had reason, to do as they did, and I desire to honor their reason, even if I may not know it for sure.

A thought....(Didn't we-the-people take God's day away from him, through 'our' deductulation that Sunday was 'gooder-through-our-logic,' than God's written Command, that His Day, be the 'Seventh - Day,' of Every Week??) /// gotta stop, I'm starting to 'think,' and that stretches out the wrinkles in my thoughts. Ha.

  • To satisfy your criticisms and ramp up our patriotism, why not make the first week of July "Independence Week"? Why should we relegate our exuberance to one day, or one weekend? I am not a subscriber to the "less is more" philosophy. More is more, I say. Let freedom and liberty ring for 7 full days. One week off is a mere pittance for the serious reflection it takes to honor the great nation God has carved out for us, no?

  • NO, Benevolus, that wouldn't re-instill Patriotism either.

The job of the Patriot, is Three-Sixty-Five,

Only that diligence, keeps Freedom Alive,

Each regulation, makes Free men have less,

The 'Lazy' demands 'more,' Socialistic, I guess.

For this Nation's survival, must Freedom, regain,

But, the track we are on, we'll soon find the train,

The train that will grind up, and spit out the rest,

Those that survive that, will be breathing, at best.

I'm on the 'dole,' as some folk would say,

Too many folk say, 'tough,' we will no pay,

My Retirement check, comes from your TAX,

When my income is gone, I'm dead from by that Ax.

My 'independence' is now higher than that,

Salvation through Jesus, no more, 'Casey at bat.'

  • Haiku

    Independence Week sounds great

    Think about it folks

    A whole week off work

    Limerick

Folks are so busy they're jerks

    And their patriotism they shirk

    But given a break

    for America's sake

A week in July outta work

    Couplet

    Seldom is joy better expressed

In a way better than liberty manifest

Yet leisure and pleasure too quickly abscond

With independence celebrations just one day long
