Slough, Doniphan-Trumbull defense shine in 35-6 win over North Platte St. Pats.
Last Wednesday Doniphan-Trumbull faced C-2's number three defense and gouged Crofton for 49 points. Tuesday night it was North Platte St. Pats number one defense that felt the sting of Doniphan-Trumbull's incredible Jordan Slough, his offensive line and the Cardinal's own swarming defense. D-T must have gone to school in the Crofton game because on this marvelous night for high school football, the Cardinals gave up an early touchdown but then proceeded to shut down the Irish for a resounding 35-6 home field C-2 quarterfinal victory. The win advances the Cardinals to a rematch with 11-0 Sutton next Tuesday. The Mustangs pulled off a thrilling 36-29 win on October 5th, but the stage is set for a classic football game in Sutton a week from today.
Doniphan-Trumbull coach Brent Breckner came out firing from the outset when the Cardinals tried an onside kick to open the game. D-T fell on the ball on the St. Pats 41 and on the first play from scrimmage, QB Riley Wiltfong went for it all and sailed a 41 yard touchdown pass to Nathamiel Armon, who had beaten St. Pats Sean Keenan on the pattern. The play however, was nullified when it was ruled Armon ran out of bounds then came back in and caught the ball. Can't do that in high school football, folks. The Cardinals would have to punt it away after 3 tries and nailed St. Pats back on their own 4 yard line. D-T held, but St. Pats was back in business after the Cards were flagged for roughing the kicker. The Irish then fashioned a 4:27, 10 play drive culminated by a 35 yard TD pass from Sean Keenan to Mark Mayfield. The point after kick was wide and the Irish had a 6-0 advantage with 4:30 left in the 1st quarter. That would be the last time North Platte St. Patricks would score in the game.
The Cardinals answered right back, going 65 yards in 9 plays. Jordan Slough had 51 yards in the drive as the offensive line of Grady Koch (73), Blake Treat (50), Joe Dinan (53), Eric Toben (72), Aaron Ediger (54), Creighton Buhr (4), and Ian Askey (6) sealed off the outside and continuously held their blocks to spring the speedy Slough. The Cardinals held the lead at the end of one, 7-6 as Nate Armon nailed the point after kick.
A couple of penalties (one of 5 in the first half) and a couple of dropped passes prevented Doniphan-Trumbull from scoring on the next drive, but after a St. Pats drive stalled at the Cardinal 41, the Irish punter made the mistake of lofting a high punt to Slough, who fielded it at his own 12, then weaved in and out of traffic for a electrifying 88 yard punt return touchdown. On the next Doniphan-Trumbull possession that began at their own 8, Jordan Slough and his "O" line took over again. Slough ripped off runs of 12, 55, 8, and 5 yards that carried to the Irish 7. Nathaniel Armon then caught a tipped pass for a 6 yard score and D-T had a 21-6 lead with 1:21 left in the half and Jordan Slough already had stormed to 135 yards rushing.
St. Pats then put together a nice drive but it ended on the last play of the half when Nathaniel Armon picked off a Keenan pass on the 1 yard line.
North Platte St. Pats did put together a nice 12 play drive in the 3rd quarter, led by the hard running of senior RB Brandon Niesen, but came up short on the D-T 24. The Cardinals then drove 80 yards to score with Slough carrying the final 19 yards for the touchdown. The drive was aided by a 12 yard completion to Armon and a personal foul call on St. Pats. To top everything else off, Slough had a 50 yard run in drive called back on a hold. The 3rd quarter ended with Doniphan-Trumbull holding a commanding 28-6 advantage.
Slough would score one more time in the 4th quarter when he dashed right through the heart of the Irish number one (C-2) defense, twisting, turning and breaking tackles for a nifty 30 yard TD run. St. Pats did have another quality drive in the quarter, but once again the vicious Cardinal defense snuffed it out at the D-T 19 yard line. The reserves then took over for both squads and Doniphan-Trumbull came away with their most impressive defensive performance of 2012 and posted a 35-6 win.
Jordan Slough ended the night with another astounding performance, gaining 276-28 carries and scoring 3 times. This brings the junior runner's season total to an unofficial 2,193 yards. He now joins Wahoo's Tyler Kavan, who eclipsed the 2000 yard rushing mark a week ago. Doniphan-Trumbull's running game was so efficient that quarterback Riley Wiltfong only had to take to the air 11 times. He completed only 3 for 28 yards, but one was the 6 yard TD pass to Armon.
St. Pats did manage do grind out 247 yards rushing for the contest, led by Brandon Niesen's 85 yards on 20 carries. St. Pats QB Sean Keenan completed 4 of 10 passes for 65 yards and had a touchdown and an interception. Doniphan-Trumbull enjoyed a 347-309 advantage in the total yard department.
So now it's on to Sutton for the rematch next Tuesday as the C-2 semi finals are set. Sutton blitzed upstart Hershey 48-7 to set up the West Bracket semi final metting with Doniphan-Trumbull. Defending C-2 champion David City Aquinas turned away Fremont Bergan in a rematch 56-28 and Lutheran High NE of Norfolk beat Ponca 42-14 Tuesday afternoon to set the East stage semi final between Aquinas and Lutheran High NE. Aquinas had their closest game of the year in the 2nd round of the C-2 playoffs a year ago, slipping by the Eagles 14-7.
