While I agree to a degree about drilling in the ANWR, you should also consider that the extreme environment of Alaska's northern reaches present problems with similarities to the nightmare developing in the Gulf. Extreme cold causes a metal failures, and cleaning up frozen crude is to be avoided too.

FYI - You are correct there are no Pelicans, but there are a few other birds that could be impacted. I've listed birds first here since MrsSmith brought them up followed by the mammels that live in the area followed by the fish species.

I personally wouldn't call it mostly empty land since so many species inhabit such a hostile land...
