    Health insurance was never meant to be a "nanny" system; it was meant to ensure protection from catastrophic illness or malady wiping out an individual or family economically. Unfortunately, the government under the guise of being "compassionate" decided to stick its fingers in the mix and begin the long list of mandates and regulation to coerce protection in areas where the markets would have never evolved naturally. This created entitlement mentality which spawned the mantra that healthcare was a right.

    It's unfortunate that the leaders of the House and the Senate won't allow Republican authored plans to the floor for consideration, let alone debate.

    Then you have goofs like Olympia Snowe who pretend to be Republicans, but stab the GOP in the heart at every opportunity.

    The plan of the Democrats is clear. Get something started, and then, even if defeated for their actions, they hope to have permanently infected the system with a right to health care.

  • I am a very 'seasoned citizen'. It has been said that my generation was willing to and did sacrifice to make things better for our children. This generation is oh so willing to sacrifice their children in order to make things better for themselves. God help us.

  • There were times, as late as the 1980s when Senators and Representatives could vote their states' and districts' direction, or their own judgement.

    President Reagan and TIP O'Neill would battle for hours in negotiatins. Then after the work was done, they would share a drink, tell jokes, talk sports and quite often work out a compromise to be announced before noon, the next day.

    No more -- with the appearance of several "all politics" neo-conservatives -- Dancin' DeLay,

    The former tree huggin' Newt Gingrich and some others, PARTY DISCIPLINE replaced common sense and "the sacred oaths of office."

    Every member of both parties voted with the other side when they agreed with a position or bill.

    NO MORE -- Olympia Snowe voted the needs of the average Maine citizen and has been attacked as a traitor.

    Suddenly, Sam the GearJammer has become qualified to rip Senator Snowe because she dared to vote with the Democrats in clearing the finance commitee's bill so a conference committee could work to combine it with the previously released version from the Health Committee.

    This nation is in serious trouble right now.

    When PARTY LOYALTY is more important than duty to country -- it is time to eliminate political parties. The Constitution is silent on the subject, so there is no constitutional justification for their existance.

  • I don't think these programs are as bad as you guys are making them out.

    Sure it sounds like some of their problems but not everything is perfect.

    I work part time (by part time I mean 14 hours a week) at Purdue University-North Central campus.

    They have one of these programs going on. Since I'm a student employee I can't say exactly how in depth it goes, but the jist of it is:

    You follow this program, take classes(from what I understand they are 1 hour things on maintaining a healthy lifestyle), exercise, eat right, and in otherwards stay healthy, you can qualify for a 200 dollar reduction on your premiums for your insurance.

    The program is completely voluntary and no punishment if you do not participate other then the fact you do not get the 200 dollars off your insurance premium.

    From my understanding of the article there's more companies and insurance agencies that are offering these things. Now the agencies may have them as a voluntary thing, the corporations however maybe a different story, I have not done anything other research to find that out. However, there is a lot of financial incentive for them to require employees do the programs.

  • Sam, Sceptre, Orville,Shaarhues,Mickel and Candy --

    I'm waiting for you good folks to start practicing what you continually preach.

    Which means -- you stay away from all things reflecting any form of governmental interference in daily lives, slightly smacking of SOCIALISM, of governmental control in any form.

    To wit:

    1) DO NOT purchase any product where the price includes taxes in any form;

    2) DO NOT use any public road, highway or interstate freeway for travel;

    3) DO NOT use any Socialist Tax Supported airport, with subsidized airlines flying on socialist controlled flight paths;

    4) DO NOT allow any child in your family to attend any of these socialist public schools;

    5) DO NOT call that SOCIALIST Fire Department if your house is on fire;

    6) DO NOT call that SOCIALIST law enforcement officer in you are the victime of an accident or crime;

    7) DO NOT apply for Social Security, Medicare or MedicAid -- those are all Socialist PLOTS intended to destroy your Simon Pure integrity.

    8) DO NOT allow anyone to put you or any member of your family into a public hospital.

    9) DO NOT allow those socialist courts to place any burgler or thief into a SOCIALIST JAIL or PRISON for any reason.

    10) DO ORGANIZE a "street campaign" designed to prevent those SOCIALIST COURTS from trying and sentencing any murderer, rapist, or arsonist.

    Fredd -

    I see just pure hatred pouring out of you on almost every comment you make. Suggestion, try to think on your own.

    Your passion is stirring, yet, I believe not very well aimed.

    To wit:

    1. Please demonstrate how the instrument of taxes is monopolized by socialists....You can't. Every society on earth has some form of collection for the greater good of the community; i.e. a good well for clean water; a wall and gate to keep out animal/human scavengers or threats; food and shelter for the widows and orphans...etc. Abuse of those taxes may not be socialist, but it's not kosher either.

    2. My gasoline taxes paid for those roads, so I certainly WILL drive on them, thank you. I'll even drive right up to the edge of your driveway and wave 'hello' to you.

    3. If any industry was FULLY subsidized or run by the government, it would indeed be an extension of Socialism. I'm not happy about farm, school, business, or health subsidies. But last I checked; I was an AMERICAN citizen and have access and right to a redress of grievances. I can shout as loud as I wish, and earned the right by exercising another right at the ballot box. Try and stop me.

    4,5 & 6. Again, paid for by my taxes, and I have also been a volunteer for ALL of these services. Paid my dues. Next.

    7. I've paid my share into SS and FICA. Now WHY would you want to deny me the use of my own money?

    8,9 & 10. Hospitals and courts are tax supported as are their employees. My taxes pay for them and I have a right to the access of them.

    You are missing the point on healthcare reform, Hank. Health insurance has been turned into a "right" instead of an "option" by politicians and those who serve the entitlement mentality. If healthcare was a "right", I would contest that we wouldn't have abortions at all, because the healthcare for those individuals is abominable. Insurance is a financial planning tool. And it has been horribly abused. You are adept at naming government waste and fraud. My question to you then, is; why would you entrust 1/6th of the nations economy to those who have so adequately proven that they are not capable of handling it?
