Shameful DemocratsPosted Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at 2:50 PM
It is essentially certain now that the Public Option is now out the window. The Democrats have folded to the Republicans and the Insurance companies in denying every American basic health insurance. From Day One I have never even come close to understanding the opposition to the Public Option. Costs would go down, insurance companies would become more competitive, every business large and small would be able to provide their workers with coverage.
But sadly the lies and disinformation have won and the cowards in Congress have taken Public Option completely off the table. Now all the talk is lowering the Medicare age to 55 and using s system similar to what federal employees are receiving. The new plan would cover only about 30 million Americans leaving the rest without insurance still in the lurch. These people who don't have insurance will continue waiting until they are at their sickest before going to the hospital and because they don't have insurance it will be up to the rest of us to foot the bill.
This all goes back to the summer when politicians like Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin were making up lies about "death squads" in an effort to scare older Americans. Polls have shown that the effort didn't work on Americans who still favor the Public Option, but apparently it worked on the Democrats in Congress who have cowered. This is big difference between Republicans in charge and Democrats in charge. The Republicans, who were in power from 1995 through 2006 pushed whatever they wanted through Congress and would shut down the Federal Government down if they didn't get what they wanted. They didn't care about bi-partisanship they only cared about getting what they wanted passed. The Democrats on the other hand want everything bipartisan and will toss out anything that means anything so they can get a bipartisan bill passed. One would have thought that the Democrats would have learned the lesson after allowing over 100 Amendments into an earlier version of the Health Care bill by Republicans only to have the Republicans still vote against the bill. Republicans will obstruct anything that will help out the Democrats in the polls and the quicker the Democratic leadership learns this the better off we will all be. Unfortunately the Democratic leadership lacks a true leader. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have shown that they talk big but when it comes to action they will cower and cow-tow to whatever the Republicans want. Speaker Pelosi has shown a bit more spine and saying that any final bill that goes to the President will have the Public Option but we will see, if the Republicans and the conservative Democrats allow a vote in the Senate, when the final bill comes to vote again in the House.
The current bill in the Senate does have some good aspects to it, it will help reduce the deficit and it is the largest reform to health care in decades, but it doesn't do enough, it doesn't have the Public Option.
Without the Public Option I fear that insurance companies will continue to raise premiums even on those that are healthy. What's to stop them? I am up for a new job and I checked their insurance options. Even with that job paying a portion of the coverage a month I would still be paying almost $4000 a year just to cover my family.
I have heard quite often from Republicans (and Joe Lieberman (DINO)) that we need to slow down on Health Care Reform. Apparently over 50 years of doing absolutely nothing on Health Care is just making them dizzy. Just remember, among developed nations American receive the worst health care. Even those nasty countries of Canada and the United Kingdom that have "socialist" health care rank significantly better than the United States.
At this point I am opposed to the Health Care reform that is currently available in the Senate. It is a complete joke and will not improve our health care system. The Democrats (the liberals anyways) need to vote against this, if the Republicans, Joe Lieberman, and the conservative Democrats allow a vote.
A little more on Joe Lieberman. This man is a complete weasle. How he is still a chairman I will never understand. Just three months ago he was completely in favor of a Medicare buy-in now all of a sudden his is completely against it. I think the liberal Democrats in the senate need to force a vote, get Lieberman out of his leadership position and vote out Harry Reid out of the position of Senate Majority leader.
Oral Roberts has died at the age of 91. I send my condolences to his family. He died from complication from pneumonia. At the age of 91 one has lived long enough to die from natural causes. It's a shame.
This by the way is in no reference to my above column I just happened to hear the news.
