*An abortion clinic in Philadelphia has decided to "honor" murdered abortion fanatic George Tiller by offering free abortions for a day. What is the point I wonder? Are they wanting the women to say, "Wow, I'll have all my abortions here from now on!" *David Letterman, a true prince of hate, has made jokes about Sarah Palin and her 14 year old daughter, Willow. Letterman, who ceased to be funny before most of you were born, said Gov. Palin looked "slutty" and said that a Yankee ball player, "knocked up" her daughter during the 7th inning stretch. Now, of course, Letterman will be exalted by the lapdog media. If Letterman can say this about a sitting Governor, is it alright for me to say that Michelle Obama is the most hateful and unattractive first lady ever? The left is very afraid of Sarah Palin. That is why they attack her so. You women that voted for Obama, just remember, the media would cut your heart out in a second, and so would the Democrat Party, anytime it is politically expedient to do so. The Democrat Party cannot stand to see a woman, who is successful, without government or legal aid, and loves her husband. The left prefers women to be bitter angry bra-burning men haters. AND, don't get mad at me for telling the truth. *Trayce L. Hansen, a licensed Psychologist, trained in forensic and clinical psychology, has pointed to research which suggest that children raised by homosexual parents are "seven times" more likely to end up homosexual. Dr. Hansen's findings are in her article "Pro-Homosexual Researchers Conceal Findings: Children Raised By Openly Homosexual Parents More Likely To Engage In Homosexuality. So much for the "born that way" argument. *The DailyPress.com reports that in an interview with President Obama's pastor and mentor, the racist and bigoted Dr. Jeremiah Wright, that Dr. Wright claims that "them Jews" won't let him see "his son" President Obama. Now we know why President Obama is eager to abandon Israel, and embrace radical Muslims. You don't spend twenty years sitting at the feet of a racist and bigot, and not have it affect you. *Adding to the disaster that is the new General Motors, Chairman Obama has selected a man to run GM, who by his own admission, knows nothing about cars. Not surprising at all. The new GM is nothing more than the United Auto Workers retirement and health care vehicle. (pun intended) *Actor Jon Voight has seen the light. Once upon a time Jon Voight was a Hollyweird darling, succumbing to the leftist line of thought, and glad to do movies with the traitor Jane Fonda. In recent years, and with some life experience behind him, Jon Voight has returned to sanity. Welcome home Jon. Mr. Voight, rightly said that Obama thinks he is a "...soft spoken Julius Caesar. He thinks he is going to conquer the world with soft spoken sweet talk. He really thinks he is going to bring all the enemies of the world into a little playground, where they will swing each other back and forth." Ya think? Jon goes on to say that we need to rid ourselves of this "Obama oppression". No kidding. Jon also called Obama a "false prophet." Truth is a beautiful thing baby. I'd like to know how you felt when Bush appointed a man to head FEMA, who's previous stint was running quarter horse contests and had no training in disaster relief.
Let's see, you take one psychologists research and completely erase all other research that has said the opposite and appoint hers as the only one being right.
Yes you are absolutely right Sam I am afraid of woman who can see Russia from her window, what that even matters I have no idea. But then again when you think Communist Russia is still alive and well I guess you would still see them as an enemy.
You always write about others hate, but you never admit your own hate. You know that if I had written something even remotely similar but about Republicans and conservatives you would be one of the first yelling hate on my part.
I've actually read through Trayce L. Hansen's article that you quote and she takes many liberties with the studies she quotes to come up with her information. On some studies she completely contradicted what the original author had said. One in particular she just outright questioned the author on his findings. In another the study was about children and their beliefs about homosexuality, their beliefs, not whether or not they were actually homosexual, and then she somehow makes the leap of faith that since they were more accepting of people that were homosexual they themselves could be gay.
So, basically, this doctor read several surveys, didn't like what they said, so she made up what they said even while posting the summaries of the other research.
Here's the article, from here website, for your own reading.
http://www.drtraycehansen.com/Pages/writ...
What amazes me the the most is that you and others similar to you apparently still think you won the last election and that people are listening to you with baited breath.
Let's see if we can't find a more reliable source than Tracye Hansen.
How about the American Psychological Association? One of the most well respected organization of psychologists in the world.
They even have a handy-dandy homosexuality FAQ!
http://www.apahelpcenter.org/articles/ar...
The highlights:
What Causes a Person To Have a Particular Sexual Orientation?
[Paraphrase] We're still not sure, but most agree that it's a complex mix of biological and environmental factors.
Is Sexual Orientation a Choice?
No
Can therapy change sexual orientation?
No
Is Homosexuality a Mental Illness or Emotional Problem?
No
Can Lesbians, Gay Men, and Bisexuals Be Good Parents?
Yes.
Now this is just from me:
Are children raised by homosexuals more likely to become homosexuals?
Maybe. I haven't seen enough convincing research on the matter (and I have read some of Dr. Hansen's research). But even if they are, so what? I'm pretty sure children raised by Christians are more likely to be Christians, but we don't care about that.
It's only a bad thing if you view homosexuality as 'wrong', or 'a sickness'. Which it isn't.
Sam and Steffanie
Seems your own people are washing their hands of you!

Wow sammy stealing jokes from Rush Limbaugh. You took that joke about the false story about Obama's birth certificate word for word from him. Very nice.
Oh man. I didn't realize that Jon Voight didn't support Obama. This changes EVERYTHING!
If I'd have know such a keen political mind, nay the greatest thinker of the past generation, was opposed to Obama's candidacy, I NEVER would have voted for him!
Oh Jon! If you had only been more outspoken during the election, I would have KNOWN who to vote for. See, I thought all your complaining during the election was to simply garner some publicity for your failing Hollywood career. But now I see that your string of mediocre movie appearances was actually a plot by the Hollyweird left to keep you out of the limelight because you didn't like Obama. How could I have been so blind!
Sam, I don't expect you to take the Hollywood people on the left seriously (Hell, I don't even take them seriously), so please don't expect me to take the Hollywood people on the right seriously just because they agree with you instead of me.
Wow I just noticed sam that you completely ripped that joke from Rush Limbaugh. Another shining example of talking points being disseminated through the land.
It's not even funny, that's the sad thing. But then again when you base a joke on a falsehood that only about 5% of the population even believe it's hard to hit the right chord, but I'm sure you were laughing your butt off this morning.
By the way just to continue correcting most of your information Letterman has already come out (and it will air tonight) and admit that he said the wrong name. He was not referring to Willow but Bristol. I love that you are showing outrage that a comedian would go after a female right politician, yet I'm sure you are laughing along when Rush does the same to let's say Hillary.
By the way nice job of copying and pasting the Palin thing directly from her.
One last thing sam, I know you don't respect us, I don't really care but at least show some respect and call our party by the right name. It is the Democratic Party. You don't see us running around calling your party the Republic Party.
I did not realize that Rush had copyrighted that joke. If Obama had a birth certificate, we'd have seen it by now.
Just like we have never seen Obama's grades in school. Why not? If Obama is so brilliant, why not produce the grades?
Your hero, talking about his sad pick for the Supreme Court, just said the Constitution was written 20 centuries ago. Truth is, Obama is a puppet for the enemies of this country, and that is why he needs his teleprompter to tell him what to say.
I cannot blame you leftists for being so PO'd. Your house of cards is going to fall, and you know it.
I do not hate anybody, I am not like you Michael and Guillermo. Don't try and push off your hatred on me, BRO, it won't work.
I tell you what I do hate.
I hate that you on the left are trying to ruin this country.
I hate the fact that my new grandsons each owe about a million bucks because of a runaway federal government.
I hate the fact that you libs want my grandkids to pay for your health care.
I hate unions that destroy companies, and act like the mafia for Democrat politicians.
I hate abortion, and the lies you leftist tell about our military. For example, Guillermo lied through his teeth in saying that our soldiers killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi's, while trying to defend Spain's cowardliness.
I hate how you religious leftists trample on the Constitution.
I hate how you in public schools are not teaching kids, you are indoctrinating them.
I hate the way you leftist smeared Sarah Palin, and her family.
I hate how you on the left lie and lie, and then get mad when you are called on it.
So jhat, now you don't care about Hollyweird huh? Funny. I sense some sarcasm.
Wow, the mighty Jhat got ruffled.
You did not refute anything Mr. Voight said, so you just dismiss it. Just like you dismiss the murder of the unborn. Just like you dismiss Obama's disastrous spending. Just like you dismiss the toll that homosexuality has on the people lost in that lifestyle. Old jhat waves his hand, and all the ugliness goes away.
Homosexuality is wrong, and while I won't call it a sickness, homosexuality is a deadly activity. If you really cared as much as you pretend, you'd be working to help these folks instead of defending abnormality. I really do care, and you pretend. I am acting out of love, you act out of some arrogant sense of intellectual superiority.
AND, that is fine. Maybe you are all smarter than me, and more educated. I still have common sense, and you, dear leftists, flushed your common sense down the commode long ago.
You see, I don't care if you leftists like me or not. My country is at stake, and I am not going to let you loonies destroy it without a fight.
AND more and more people are coming to reason every day, even with your lapdog media propagandizing the sheeple.
The Democrat party has hurt this country for too long. JFK, Truman and even Hubert Humphrey would be appalled at what you religious leftists have done to the Democrat Party. Enough is enough.
I come on here and tell the truth. All Michael can do is cry hate, Jhat tries to dismiss and intellectualize everything, and Guillermo spews his anti-American venom while trying to defend the cowardly actions of Spain.
I am not one of your students Michael, so stop acting like you can tell me what to do. When the Democrat party starts acting with true democratic principles, then I'll call them democratic.
You are not going to destroy my grandsons future with your liberal insanity. Not gonna happen.
You guys are finished, the sooner you accept it, the better for everyone.
Oh, and by the way, you can respect the American Psychological Association, I don't. They have been in the tank for religious leftist thought for far too long. Give 'em enough money to do biased research, and they will produce exactly what you leftists tell them to produce.
If you guys think you can prevail, and change the USA into some totalitarian state, then bring it. I am not going anywhere.
Another Rush joke. A difference between God and Obama? God doesn't think he is Obama.
Have a nice day.
Steffanie - I almost forgot - I appreciate you!
Michael - considering ACORN, illegals, felons, the Black Panthers and the voter fraud the Democrat Party routinely engages in, I am not so sure you won the last election. Who knows how many dead Democrats voted in the last election.
Sam,
I find it interesting that you want to see Obama's transcripts from school.
Sarah Palin literally thought Africa was a country and not a continent. She also did not know how many member the house of represenatives had. These are confirmed facts. Thus, I'd much rather check that report card.
Oh and I want to see George Bush's birth certificate. Since I personally haven't seen it, it must not exist.
Such lunacy is ridiculous.
Obama's Hawaiian birth is well documented and the birth certificate was filed with his election to the Illinois legislature, again with his election to Congress.
Is anyone idiot enough to believe a national candidate for the opposition would be allowed to seek national office under a Bush regime, without proving all credentials, including date and place of birth.
One last thing, Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson Obama have documented superior academic credentials.
For Gawd's sake, Idiot Child, he was Managing Editor of the Harvard Law Review. That basically is the number one professional honor among all the law school students nationally.
Number One at the Number One Law School ain't fake.
Sam, you are a semi-literate gear jammer, listening to Savage, Beck, Limbaugh, and the whole crowd of Right Wing Hate preachers and believing their lies.
You could not survive economically if the rest of us didn't maintain a national road system for you.
Hank - you are wrong, as usual. You do not subsidize anything for me, again I ask you to stop making things up. You have to get over your hatred of truck drivers. Just because a truck driver stole your woman, or kicked your puppy, it does not give you the right to make things up.
Limbaugh is not a liar, he is a patriot, and he does not tell lies, you do.
If the Illinois State legislature has Obama's birth certificate, then let's see it.
There was no Bush regime, who is regurgitating talking points now? Sometime ago, you said you were a centrist, that is a lie too, isn't it Hank?
Calling me names doesn't do anything Hank. Idiot child? Is that the best you have? No wonder you are so frustrated. There is much envy in your heart. You really hate rich folks huh? Feel cheated in life? Poor baby. Hank wasn't born rich, and that isn't fair. Whaaaaaaaa!
Harvard Law review? LOL Affirmative action. Now you can beleive in this guy, and all his lies if you want too. Just stop trying to con me, I won't go for it.
Since you know so much about your heroes, tell me how Obama paid for all that Ivy league education with no visable means of support? It was a member of your Democrat Party, Geraldine Ferraro that said that Obama would not be were he was, except for his race. I didn't say that, your former VP candidate said it.
AND, I will continue to listen to Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Beck and Savage, when I can. Thank you for your permission.
McCook Reader, you so eagerly beleive the lies of the left. Sarah Palin is a fine woman, and a smart woman, and a woman who had actual experience, compared to Obama, who had no experience in anything other than hate and agitation.
Bush released his grades, Obama has not. Why is he hiding? Sorry you two...your hero is a phony. Getting angry at me does not change the facts.
Sam, keep on truckin', keep on writin' and keep on stirrin' them liberals up. They do get all exercised at you!! Quoting Rush or whoever said this "To a liberal, truth is hate speech". I love readin' ya', Sam
That last line is a little harsh Herndon. But it is very true.
And I for one am with Sam. Until the federal government places a copy of obama's birth certificate in Sam's hands, Obama is an alien. We all know Sam gets the final say on fact and fiction. He's sort of like a librarian, but on a higher level.
First off,
Who gives a dam what Jon Voight has to say... he is another washed up hollywood type trying to get back into the media...
Sam,
Stick to trucking... comedy obviously isn't gonna work out for you and now your just cutting and pasting like Sarah Palin did parts of her speeches...
Steffanie,
Once again you never cease to completely embarrass your party and sex. Stick to asking people if they want beans and sour cream and let the adults talk.
Once again sam is proven wrong on a subject when not only I show that the person he used to help his case against homosexuality not only cherry picked her information often times just outright lied about what the study's actually showed jhat then shows the real information, so typical of sam and other posters on here he doesn't accept it. He says that American Psychological Association is in the pocket of the Democratic Party. Oh my dear god ... ha ha ha. He reminds me of one my neighbors who is having issues with a suit she is trying to get going against the company that sold her the house she is living in. To date she says the city, all the lawyers in the city, and all the lawyers in two other cities are being paid off by this little real estate agency.
You sam are completely paranoid and are full of a rage. I use to think it was funny, now it's a little scarry. I honestly think you are going to pull what that neo-nazi pulled yesterday or what that muslim in little rock pulled last week and then say that your murder(s) were justified.
There's a word for people who present their own beliefs as fact and then demand everyone else prove them wrong and THEN when they are proven wrong go off on a rage completely ignoring those facts .... SAD
Look, I don't see why people get so upset at Sam for his rants that's what he wants. I agree that he is most likely full of anger and hate, I don't see how you interpreted his initial blog today as being hateful.
I agree with you jhat about the influence of celebrities. I don't know why anyone would think that because someone is lucky, or pretty, or rich why thier opinion should matter more than anyone elses, unfortunately with the media crazed society we live in they are given more weight than they should be.
Mike:
Sheesh, why don't you lay off with the Democrat/Democratic party label, we know who he is talking about. To be fair I find it a little confusing myself. Why are members of the Democratic Party called Democrats not Democratics? Republicans aren't called Republics. Give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he is just meaning a party full of Democrats :)
I didn't catch the Dave Letterman joke when it broke, but is it really better to make the joke about Bristol than Willow? Either way it seems pretty tasteless to me.
I find it just as hypocritical for people like Sam to give a pass to the Republicans as it is for others to give a pass to the Democrats.
Bristol put herself in the spotlight by going on countless shows and doing interviews. You as well anyone knows that when anyone goes into the public spotlight (Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative) they are subject to ridicule.
Were the jokes tasteless? Yes and Letterman has admitted to that.
Guillermo,
LOL that's funny.
Although I'm pretty sure your previous Spanish post could be flagged as offensive unless I'm translating it incorrectly. Really, what is the point of insulting someone if they don't understand it?
Mike,
I didn't say she isn't fair to rebute, but are tasteless jokes the way to do it? Are you not sick of all the useless mudslinging and abhorrent behavior people exhibit these days? If I have an issue with someone's views I will address the specific instances. I think ridiculing (sp) goes too far in any case, it detracts from any dialogue and removes the possibility of any civilized discusssion. Do you think you can have a discussion with Steffanie? Sure it may be "fun" to resort to such juvenile behavior to some, but I find that just as sad.
HAH the website allows cago but not perdon? That's funny you could probably leave all verbal markers aside but it is amusing.
Sam,
Watch a Sarah Palin interview. She is not exatcly a wordsmith. Oh and by the way, how can you go at Obama's academic accolades but not Palin's.
Do your research. Palin dropped out of 3 colleges in less than 3 years. She failed out of an Idaho community college in less than 2 semesters. She changed colleges 7 times in 5 years. None of them were notbale institutes.
Obama graduated from ivy league school Columbia University and then went to Harvard Law school and went on to teach law at Chicago University.
Palin on the other hand took 5 years, 2 community colleges, and 5 other schools to receive her bachelor's in communication.
Will you for once admit that you are wrong? Obama is clearly more educated than Palin. There is no question to it. And don't call these liberal lies. You can confirm Palin's enrollment and withdrawl from each and every of her school's. It is all on record.
Reader,
I don't think Sam will apologize, I think he is an ideologue. All the Liberal academic credits Obama has only further incite such thinkers. Likewise they hold up Palin's lack of such credentials to be a virtue. Personally I don't think a person's academic history has much to do with them being a good or bad person or politician.
And it's University of Chicago, they get a little touchy about it.
There is no issue with Obama's birth certificate. It is on record. There were two different suits issued on this and both were dismissed.
I don't question Palin's intelligence. But to stand there and say that she should not be questioned or put under the microscope because she is a woman is laughable. You have had no problem doing the exact same with Hillary Clinton, but when it is done to someone on your side you get all in a twitter. As to the question of being afraid of her? Why would we as a party be afraid of someone who in recent poll of 1000 Republicans received 4 votes.
Using one experts opinions on what other experts wrote to support your opinion and then slamming the a national organization because you feel they are in the pocket of the Democrat(ic) Party shows that you don't accept facts unless they support you.
It was mentioned on one of these threads the the Democratic Party kicked Joe Lieberman out of the party. That is just an absolute lie. He left on his own accord.
The Democratic voters in Connecticut were unhappy with him so they voted for someone else. Lieberman created his own independent party and largely won on moderate and conservative votes.
He still considers himself a Democrat, he still caucuses with the party, and his is a chairman in the Senate.
Yep he got kicked out all right.
I wasn't 'ruffled' Sam. Using sarcasm doesn't make me 'ruffled' or angry. It just means I was using sarcasm to prove a point. Never been in a sarcastic mood? (But thanks for calling me mighty).
And I don't know what Jon Voight said. All I know is that YOU say he's seen the light and come to the conservative/republican side. I don't know what he said for one reason, I don't listen to actor's opinions on politics. I don't pay attention to them, and if I hear them anyway I don't give them any credence. Because they're actors. Just because they star in movies doesn't give them clairvoyant political savvy. Why don't you let me know what Mr. Voight said, THEN I'll respond (or dismiss it). I really have no interest in spending the 10 seconds of my life it would take to look up his quote.
And please, if you want someone to blame for your grandchildren's debt, look at how the national debt increased under Reagan, Bush, and Bush. Seriously. Go to the treasury's website and look up the figures.
Yes, it is a shame that Obama is going to be contributing so much to the national debt. But I have seen NO better solutions for our economic woes than what the administration is doing now. (I've heard the Republican's claim that cutting taxes will fix it, but I simply don't believe them.)
Sam,
You just proved my point.
Trying to reason with you about facts is clearly wasted effort.
You are the epitome of the concept of: "Don't try to confuse me with facts, my mind is made up."
Back to my central point.
It is all right for you to hurl every slur, use every scurrilous attack upon those where you disagree, but when I come back at you with the same approach, that's terrible.
You had a chance to receive what you have been doing to others.
Your response is that I obviously hate all professional truck drivers. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I do totally dislike truckers who habitually overload their axles and destroy our roads.
Every driver can find his load One to Five Per Cent overweight, without intending it.
It is the guy who has a routine short haul with two to three times the allowable weight, and sneaks out at 1 a.m., slipping along lightly built side roads, out onto lightly patrolled sections of freeway and quickly back off -- while two scout cars guard against surprise -- that's the guy who irritates the blazes out of me.
To make a few hundred dollars, he is happy to cause six figure damage to the public roads.
The long-hauler team which grinds coast to coast in six days, staying within ten miles of the speed limit and within legal weight limits, while insuring their equipment is well maintained -- THESE ARE MY HEROES.
You have written some good blogs. But not when you take off on the political extremes.
Your allegiance to clowns such as Savage (Indicates you have never observed him at San Franciso's Folsom Street S&M Fair) is no mark of honor.
Start reading and researching for yourself. Hit the libraries along the way, reading WALL STREET JOURNAL, BARRONS, FORBES AND FORTUNE MAGAZINES, THE ECONOMIST, PROGRESSIVE FARMER, NATION'S BUSINESS, NEWSWEEK AND any other newspapers and magazines which cover the gamut of reportage and thinking.
By the way, have you ever published a copy of your birth certificate to prove you are legally entitled to hold a CDL?
Wake up and smell the coffee man.
Reports are coming in from the Middle East, voters in Lebanon elected a pro-American government in their elections only a couple of days after Obama's Cairo speech.
Observers are in shock that pro-American candidates are showing well in IRAN.
Wouldn't it be shocking if PEACE BROKE OUT!!~!
HerndonHank, I agree that is a great thing that days after Obama gave his speech that a pro-American government surprised everyone by winning a come from behind victory, but I am going to hold off on the Iran situation until the election is over.
To your point about the truckers. I'm sure that in that case that is the exception rather than the rule. I have seen some seriously bad truck drivers on the road but I am not going to condemn the entire trucking industry because of them. I hope sam is one of the courteous drivers. I have no way of knowing. I am not going to assume that he is one of the bad drivers because of the bad examples.
"Homosexuality is wrong, and while I won't call it a sickness, homosexuality is a deadly activity. If you really cared as much as you pretend, you'd be working to help these folks instead of defending abnormality. I really do care, and you pretend. I am acting out of love, you act out of some arrogant sense of intellectual superiority."
What makes homosexuality 'wrong'? Your religion? Your moral system? If it's your religion, surely you recognize that not everyone interprets Christianity the way you do, and that others don't practice Christianity at all.
What makes it a 'deadly activity'? I'm assuming you are referring to the stereotypical sexual promiscuity that most people think always accompanies homosexuality. I don't know what your view of it is Sam, but I know many people seem to have this preconception that gay people all spend lots of time in nightclubs, doing drugs, and having promiscuous sex with each other.
Certainly this is true for many gay people. It's also true for many straight people. And while I don't condone that lifestyle, I certainly wouldn't condemn an entire group for the lifestyle choices of a part of that group.
I've known lots of people, both gay and straight, who chose to follow that reckless lifestyle. But I've also know MANY gay people and straight people who live out more 'normal' lives.
Anyone who has this narrow view about homosexuals needs to meet some average gay people.
I have a friend that lives in New York. He lives in a small apartment in Manhattan. He lives a quiet life. He is intelligent, college educated, and hard-working. He dates a bit, but he's still a virgin. He's waiting for the right guy to come into his life before becoming sexually active.
I have another friend who has an advanced degree in Chemistry. She will soon be moving away to go to work for a pharmaceutical company. Her girlfriend of 4 years will be moving with her, and continuing her education at a university.
I have a gay roommate in college that used to live a more dangerous lifestyle. He was into the party-scene, along with recreational drug use and sexual promiscuity (as many straight people are too). He has since quieted down, after realizing that wasn't a life he could lead forever and be satisfied. The last I heard from him, he had a steady boyfriend for about a year, and was enrolling in culinary school to become a chef.
The fact that these people, my friends, are so marginalized by society, breaks my heart. They are, by all accounts, happy, well-adjusted, successful people. And I cannot stand the way many people look down on them, just because of their sexual preference. And the fact that my country doesn't afford them the same legal rights that I am privy to makes me ashamed.
Do many gay people live a dangerous lifestyle? Yes. Probably a higher percentage than heterosexuals. But that stereotype doesn't hold true for all gay people. And certainly there are contributing factors that influence those numbers. The fact that many gay people are ashamed or confused, because of society's general perception of them. The fact that marginalizing a group of people strengthens sub-cultures that resort to extremes, acts of defiance against society.
Sam. I'm not 'pretending'. I do care about these people. And there is nothing 'abnormal' about homosexuality itself. It's been documented as occurring in human populations before even ancient greek times. And it occurs naturally in hundreds of species of animals, from primates to fruit flies.
You're not 'acting out of love'. At best, you are acting out of misunderstanding. And at worst you are acting out of bigotry.
And I'm not acting out of 'intellectual superiority', I'm acting on equality. And yes, I am acting on love. Love for my friends, who I want to see afforded the same rights and acceptance I am.
(I realize I seemed pretty hard on actors in one of my previous comments. Let me clarify. A good point/idea is good regardless of who makes it, an actor, a politician, a cook, etc. What irks me is the special attention that's paid to celebrity political opinions. So I go out of my way to avoid celebrity political grandstanding whenever possible, from both celebs on the left and the right. That said, I do make exceptions for celebrities whose job it is to talk about and/or mock politics. Jon Stewart, Dennis Miller, Bill Maher, etc.)
Being a Christian, I believe that Christianity should support equal rights for gay people. In Christianity, homosexuality is a sin and not even one of the 11 Commandments btw. Even with this fact of the religion, if you look at what Jesus did while spreading God's Word, he actually took the sinners and brought them closer to him. He gave them highly important positions, honored them and helped them in every way he could. Why should we not do the same thing today?
He didn't seem too pleased with many of the formal leaders of the established religion of the time because they wanted to divide and exclude certain people instead of uniting and including them. That battle is still being waged and it's up to those who live according to Jesus' example to continue fighting for a very simple idea... love heals, hate kills.
"And please, if you want someone to blame for your grandchildren's debt, look at how the national debt increased under Reagan, Bush, and Bush. Seriously. Go to the treasury's website and look up the figures."
I agree, there is more than enough blame to go around, both sides have not done what they need to. I've made the comment several times that I'm bothered by the fact that people are so partisan that they refuse to see reason, they are too busy blaming the other side or defending thiers.
"Yes, it is a shame that Obama is going to be contributing so much to the national debt. But I have seen NO better solutions for our economic woes than what the administration is doing now. (I've heard the Republican's claim that cutting taxes will fix it, but I simply don't believe them.)"
Now I'm no great economic scholar, but does anyone really believe either side is right? It seems to me that when my budget is out of whack, there are 3 ways to fix it: 1) Reduce Spending, 2) Raise more money, or 3) Reduce spending and raise more money simultaneously (seems to me to be the best bet)
Republicans cry about cutting taxes but they don't reduce spending. Democrats increase spending but don't raise money to cover it. I think the way should be to both cut spending and raise taxes but to raise taxes on everyone rather than trying to pit sides against each other. Because I think this idea makes sense, I know it will never happen and I could never be a politician.
Hank,
"Reports are coming in from the Middle East, voters in Lebanon elected a pro-American government in their elections only a couple of days after Obama's Cairo speech.
Observers are in shock that pro-American candidates are showing well in IRAN."
Do you really think Obama's speech is what led to the election of a popular politician who is the son of a popular politician who was assassinated causing a large groundswell of support? I'm not one of those Obama haters but I seriously think you are attributing too much to him. I generally dismiss the rantings of the right wingers who rail against "Obama the Messiah" but it is comments like that which gives them ammo.
I also think it is a far stretch to call Mr. Mousavi "Pro-American." Less Conservative than Ahmadinejad, sure. More open to dialogue with the world, absolutely. Pro-American, not so much. I don't think the clerics who actually run the country would allow a pro-American candidate to run.
SWNebr,
I don't think we can attribute the swing in Lebanon's elections entirely to Obama, no. But it's certainly possible that his speech was a contributing factor. It's my understanding that the opposition (and more moderate pro-western) party was not showing well in polls, and was not expected to do well in the election. So either the polls were drastically wrong (very possible) or something (or somethings) happened to swing public opinion at the last minute. There is no way for us to really know if Obama's speech contributed to that.
"Reduce spending and raise more money simultaneously (seems to me to be the best bet)"
I agree. And I think that (relatively) Obama is being fairly responsible about finding money to pay for his initiatives. We've heard talk about increasing taxes on the top earning brackets. Taxing tobacco/alcohol/soda more, taxing employer health care benefits. And whether you want those taxes to go up or not, you at least have to appreciate that he's trying to get the money from somewhere, instead of tacking it all onto the national debt.
It's also my understanding that Obama wants to re-institute a more rigid PAYGO spending system. That is, for every dollar you spend, you have to account for where it's coming from (budget cuts, more taxes, etc). The end of the last PAYGO system coincided with our budget surplus turning into a deficit (2001), so hopefully it's re-institution will help control spending.
I just heard about this yesterday, and I admit that I am not yet well-read enough about the PAYGO system to argue it's merits or detractions. It just sounds like a good idea on the surface, so I thought I'd mention it. (at the very least, it seems it would stop the "these tax cuts will pay for themselves eventually!" mentality).
"It's my understanding that the opposition (and more moderate pro-western) party was not showing well in polls, and was not expected to do well in the election."
I seriously question the validity of polls in a nation like Lebanon, or any nation really. Particularly in an area where being known to not support a para-military group which has a large well armed pressence. But I could be wrong, maybe Obama's speech rang the bell of freedom for the Lebanese.
I also hadn't heard much about the PAYGO system you mention, I'll have to look into it. I do however have problems with the proposed taxes. It continues to set a system that pits one group of people against another. I understand there is no foolproof tax system but I don't think you can be so selective in who you tax. As unfortunate as it is when I have to agree with far right nuts, I have heard Limbaugh rant about this and in some ways he is right. A stopped clock and all that.
When the government creates a tax that is aimed at one group, eventually they get all the money they can from that group and then they have to expand that tax to others. I'll call it the "First they came" theory of taxation. The government is wonderful at creating new programs and terrible at running them or eliminating them when they are not needed in my opinion.
SWNebr,
I see your point. And it does seem unfair to target one group for taxation over others.
But for example, the tax on alcohol/tobacco/soda, I am all for. I mean, I USE all three (tobacco only occasionally), and I'm still for that tax. That tax would not only generate more revenue (which we need), but discourage people from abusing substances which will negatively affect their health.
As for progressive taxation (taxing the wealth with higher rates), I understand how it seems unfair. Why should they give the government 39 cents on the dollar when poor people only have to give 10 cents on the dollar (if that). But I think there are many good arguments to rationalize this as necessary.
A flat tax always sounds good to me in theory (everyone pays an equal share), but I also see so many problems with that. Wealthy people are able to afford lawyers and financiers to hide their money to ensure that they DON'T pay their fair share. Additionally, many wealthy people make most of their money through capital gains or other mechanisms that end up not being taxed at the same rate.
For instance:
If a man makes $357,701+ in income, he falls into the top income bracket, and pays a 35% marginal tax rate.
And if you make from $32,551 -- $78,850 (which is the 'middle' income bracket), you pay a marginal tax rate of 25%.
That might not seem fair. You only pay significantly less (per dollar) in taxes. But consider the following.
The wealthy man whose income is in the top bracket probably also makes alot of money on capital gains (investments, etc). His capital gains earnings is currently only taxed at 15%.
Sure, you could take advantage of the lower capital gains tax. But you have (on average) significantly less money to invest than the man who makes $300,000 a year.
Of course, we could make the tax rates the same. Everyone pays the same in capital gains AND income taxes. But that doesn't solve the problem of wealthy people being more able to hide their money in off-shore accounts and tax-shelters. (Not that that is the only reason for progressive income tax, just an example).
I'm not so much against a progressive tax, well at least not much more than I am for most taxes. The problem is, I think I mentioned although maybe I just thought it, no system is perfect. Any system allows for cheats, just as the wealthy now have ways to avoid some taxes. However I have particular problems with the intent of the tobacco etc. taxes. My problem isn't so much with the idea of certain luxury taxes, my issue is with the way the government spends the money. If those taxes were used as a way to offset other tax burdens for the general population I wouldn't have any greater problem with it than other taxes.
For me the fear is this:
We tax the tobacco to pay for a specific program. We have the added benefit that tobacco users decide to quit using to save money and in turn improve thier health (hooray!). What happens to the program that had been previously been supported by the tobacco tax? Does the government reduce or eliminate the program? Not ruddy likely. Or does the government find someone else to tax to pay for the program which logically ends with we all pay the taxes for the program after we have been told not to worry about it that we wouldn't have to pay as long as we avoid certain luxuries?
My problem isn't so much with the tax system although like any red-blooded American I don't like paying taxes :) Rather, my bigger concern is poor government spending which happens regardless of which party is in favor at any time.
In general I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, which is why I have no friends ;)
SWNebr,
Understood. I'm in favor of a government option health plan, for reasons that I won't go into here. But I don't want it to just be 'added to the bill', which is why I'm satisfied that Obama/congress are at least looking for a way to pay for it, instead of simply 'adding it to the tab'.
I'll be your friend. I've got plenty of fiscal conservative/social liberal friends. We have great debates over dinner about spending. All too often, I lose. Though in my defense, one of them is an economist, and able to talk over my head quite effectively ;)
Only in government can you have an unprecedented amount of debt and look to spending more money on more programs. No business or family could do that. Of course, the business and the family have more responsibility and common sense than the government does.
McCook1,
Indeed. But our current financial crisis was not caused by government debt. It was caused by collapse of private financial institutions. And unfortunate as it is, government spending is an effective way to boost the economy. When private citizens stop investing/purchasing, you risk stalling the market (see Great Depression). So the government needs to step UP spending to help pick up the slack, and lessen the blow.
Ask President Hoover, who slashed spending to balance the budget in 1929, and President Franklin who drastically INCREASED spending via the New Deal and WWII. Which solution seemed to work better?
Going back to one of the original points on this blog and that is concerning David Letterman's jokes about one of Sarah Palin's daughters. She said she would never go on his show because he was an old man making sexual jokes about a 14 yr old girl.
My question is will she give the same ban to Rush Limbaugh who nastily went after Chelsea Clinton when she was only 12?
Of course she wont, she's trying to score political points. Proving once again the hypocritical nature of today's Republican Party.
They were against filibusters before they were for them.
They were for the bailout before they were against it.
They were for the nuclear option before they were against it.
They were for quickly getting a Supreme Court justice on the court before they were for going through ALL the information.
The list goes on and on and on.
A point was brought up to me by a friend that I really hadn't realized, since gay adoption really has only been semi-allowed in this country just in the past 20 years or so, how does that explain the gay people throughout the ages?
It doesn't, but when you only operate as if the last 20-30-40 years as all the history you need then facts like those above are easy to overlook.
Just like the whole "We didn't have Socialism in this country until Obama" argument. It's not even close to being true, but it makes a darn good catchphrase which most people relate to.
Hey McCookReader,
Seems I remember Hillary catching H-E Double toothpicks for standing by her man -- from the right wing conservatives.
I also remember Senator Alphonse Demato of NY getting caught back in the winter of '93-'94 totally in bed with the Mafia -- video tapes showed him literally kissing a Mafia Don's ring and figuratively all four cheeks.
"Cus" tried to divert the voters by spending the next four years attacking Hillary, particularly for standing by her man.
End result, he made her the best known Democratic name in New York State. He didn't make it past the GOP primary, despite seniority, and Hillary became the New York Senator.
Then there are the two female California senators, both being constantly hammered because their husbands are highly successful and socially responsible businessmen.
Neither has ever won a Snowmobile race or worked on the North Slope, or been a Salmon Fisherman -- or had a pregnant and single teenage daughter.
The tragedy there is that the Palin kids were made a big part of her campaign. Reality, they did not hold up well under the examination.
But then, neither did the mother. First Dude came out best of all.
Not to mention the non-stop attacks on Judge Sotomayor. Have you noticed Poppa Bush, Laura Bush and the former Republican Party Chairman -- endorsing Judge Sotomayor.
By the way, Sam insists 4-wheeler owners do not subsidize the trucking industry. Every independent study of highway costs and wear and tear says trucks do not cover roadway damage with their own taxes.
Reality, as an economy, we rely on truck movement of goods and materials.
Unfortunately, weight limits are set for the right hand lanes of the Interstates, where the trucks are supposed to run 95% of the time.
But when a legal load is hauling down the left lanes, or moves off the Interstate to local surface roads, streets and highways -- real damage in inevitable. I've seen small towns lose more than half their commercial business, from a big rig taking out a county-bridge which was the only access from most of the trade area.
The county seat, 25 miles distant, took the trade and never gave it up.
No one has come up with a workable formula for the problem. Which does not mean anyone hates truckers or trucks.
Just as virtually every business in the nation has some form of federal subsidy, somewhere in the system. -- so do the truckers.
To be a rabid opponent of everyone else's slice of the governmental subsidy pie and at the same time be a major beneficiary of specific goodies -- just might be considered hypocritical.
By the way, for those of you objecting to the hurrahing of Miz Sarah. She did bounce from college to college and got a degree in communications at U. of Idaho.
That was not a degree in Electrical Engineering--Computer Science Option, or Chemical Engineering, or VetMedicine.
With one of my majors in Agriculture Journalism, I can testify to the fact that the communications field of study does not require much. I was much happier with high marks in the wide range of ag sciences required in my program -- Genetics with a 97.5% grade average, ag engineering with Solid A's, Pasture and Forage Crops where memorization of every detail about 100 species every week was the minimum for passing, with my A's requiring much more.
In reality, the four years during high school where I worked with my hometown weekly was of far more value in my life than the university classroom training in the field.
But, COMMUNICATIONS as a major proving academic power --- NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!
Finally and seriously, Sam, write of your work weeks, roads traveled, areas seen, mountain passes driven, city traffic survived and the people -- There are some awesomely good people out there.
The folks at Nickolls Steakhouse in Fruitland, Idaho, the Three Thieves Steak Houses in Canon City, Colorado and Santa Fe, NM, at Maria's out by the college in Santa Fe, MOM'S CAFE in Salina, Utah, El Monte in Reedley, California, the pie cooks at the big Shell Truck Stop west of Tucumcari, the weekend layover crowd at Hilltop Motel, outside of Pullman, WA, and at Royal Motel in Albuquerque, NM.
Tell us about the good things connected with trucking and the good people.
I notice you did not enjoy the negative names aimed your way. It was done by way of demonstrating the error in calling people, including our President, names.
Despite the fact, that going back to when the President of the Texas RANGERS MLB franchise was routinely passing out in "Third Base Boxes" long before he became governor -- and his pathetic record as the Strictly Ceremonial Texas Governor-- and his oh-so-successful years as President, the worst I've ever called him is DubYah.
The meanest I got toward VP Cheney, labeling him "Shotgun" Dick.
Consider, Army auditors have identified $34-Billion in totally fraudulent charges and fraudulent overcharges by Kellog-Brown and Root, Dick Cheney's small subsidiary firm. Haliburton had the big contracts.
Today, the Wall Street Journal had a major report on the HUNDRED MILLION PLUS fraudulent overpayments to BLACKWATER for their security work in Iraq.
The incredible thing is Pres. Obama is being attacked by the far left LIBERALS for his moderate, centrist positions -- and by the far right REACTIONARY CONSERVATIVES for his moderate, centrist positions.
Having watched and listened to the Cairo speech, I have been as astonished as anyone at the immediate impact.
He totally turned Lebanon's election around and has sparked the first serious public opposition [Four days and counting] to the so-called Iranian REVOLUTIONARY government in nearly 33 years.
Remember those nutcases, with Iran's incumbent president as a primary student leader, sent Jimmy Carter home to Plains, GA.
Pres. Obama calmly and logically outlined the facts surrounding at least eight of the major issues affecting the Middle East.
He directly addressed the eight most highly charged issues, and touched upon two more.
No other leader or any country has openly faced any one of those issues.
The response of the people of Lebanon and Iran is the most powerful testimony to our new president's impact.
There is no way to ignore that impact.
Not only is it possible to ignore the impact, the far right has actually found a way to belittle the President for talking and not attacking.
