Beat Rice

Anytown, USA.

It is interesting to see all the different names of towns in the USA. Some are very accurate, like Plainview and Brownfield, Texas. Nothing there but a plain view and a brown field. Some are just weird. Like, Drain, Oregon. Drain? What do you call the high school football team in Drain, the Stoppers? The Clogs?

I did not find out because it would ruin my fun. Another fun name is Lovelock, Nevada. What is a lovelock? What do you name the girls volleyball team from Lovelock, the Lady Lovelocks?

Oh well Lovelock is a better name than Walla-Walla. What were they thinking? Then there is George, Washington. Clever.

I was surprised how many cities, counties, lakes and parks are named "Clinton" in the USA. I wondered if people who live in a town called Clinton, or Clinton County, voted more for Bill Clinton.

I wonder if the folks who live in Cuervo or Corona, New Mexico, really drink Cuervo or Corona.

This may be hard to believe, but there are TEN towns in Tennessee called "Fairview". Ten with the same name. Why? I have no clue. I delivered to one of the Fairviews, outside of Nasheville, and I asked the guy about the nine. He said didn't know about the other Fairviews. Hummm.

Then there is the town of Weed, California. What are they growing in Weed? Do you really want to do business with someone from Shafter, California?

I like the native Indian names of some towns, like Lame Deer, Greybull, Spotted Horse or Ten Sleep.

One name that amused me is Hurricane, Utah. That name just seems weird in Utah. You would not find a town called Ocean View, Kansas.

Earth, Texas is a great name, along with Blue Earth, Minnesota. Although Blue Earth is really very green. In you drive through north Texas 287 you soon come to Paris.......Texas that is.

AND out in the middle of the west Texas wilderness is the town of Ozona. I mean this town is in the middle of nowhere. Barely a town, however, for some strange reason, there is a man who has a car museum there with nice classic cars, formula one racers, hot rods, on display, for those who travel the wilderness. Why Ozona? By the way, if you decide to travel I-10 to Ozona, you can drive 80 MPH! Enjoy.

My favorite town name is Bountiful, Utah. Bountiful appears to be just that, sitting nicely on the side of a huge mountain, just north of Salt Lake City.

What is the town with the worst name? Well, that would be Liberal, Kansas.

Finally, I was in eastern Nebraska and had stopped for coffee. I decide to give the poor clerk at the convenience store in this town a hard time.

"You folks sure name your towns strange names around here."

"What do you mean?" The clerk asks.

"Well," I say, "Beat Rice is just a strange name to me."

"Beat Rice?"

"Yeah, that's the name I saw on the sign coming into town."

His face wrinkles. "Mister," he says a bit annoyed, "the name of this town is Be-a-trice. Not Beat Rice."

I flashed a smile and the clerk shook his head. "You had me goin' pal." And we had a good laugh.

Have a great day friends.

The best name for any town anywhere is a small village in Great Britain:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

It's literal translation is:

St. Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel Near to the Rapid Whirpool of Llantysilio of the Red Cave.

In other words the name of the town is a description of where it is.

If you would like to listen and then try to pronounce the name of the town here is a link:

Sam,

Loved the dig on liberal KS. I hate to say it but that was a classic. Had me laughing.

I was hoping folks would take it in the right spirit. I get way to intense - serious and I need to lighten up.

Thanks for reading

Interesting you should ask what they grow in Weed, CA? The Mt. Shasta Brewing Co. located in Weed brews some of the best beer in the west = Weed Brews and Ales, and got themselves in some trouble suggesting on their bottle caps that people should "Try legal Weed." The DEA got tied in a knot trying to outlaw something in a town with a Weed PD, Weed Hi, and Weed Chamber of Commerce. Weed loves its founder, Abner Weed! http://www.weedchamber.com/

Thanks for the sanity break, mtshastacountry! We LOVE Cali, and find the outlying areas to be so refreshing! After seeing the I-5 crazies...we'll take the Northern nether regions! Here's to Weed!
