The Power Of The Dog

A Poem, by Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way,

From men and women to fill our day;

And when we are certain of sorrow in store,

Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware,

Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie--

Perfect passion and worship fed

By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.

Nevertheless it is hardly fair

To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits

Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,

And the vet's unspoken prescription runs

To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find--it's your own affair--

But ... You've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)

When the spirit that answered your every mood

Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,

You will discover how much you care,

And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,

When it comes to burying Christian clay.

Our loves are not given, but only lent,

At compound interest of cent per cent.

Though it is not always the case, I believe,

that the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:

For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-term loan is as bad as a long--

So why in Heaven (before we are there)

Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

-Rudyard Kipling

I know we have allot of friends of dogs out there. This is a wonderful poem, that every friend of a dog can appreciate. My oldest dog TuKo, is fourteen, and from the looks of things, it won't be long before my heart will be torn by a dog. I have noticed that volunteers have been walking many of the dogs at the Humane Society in McCook; how wonderful it is to see folks spending a few minutes to help these poor dogs. Walking the dogs in the shelter, helps them settle down, and gives the dogs the opportunity to "present" themselves to possible families.

Sure, we hate it when our friend, our member of the family, dies after spending so many years with us, but truly, are we not better for having dogs?

L. I wish I could say that I had posted such a beautiful poem and the additional thoughts behind it but that was not me. Sam deserves the credit this time. Thank you Sam.

Amy,

The "POWER OF THE DOG" IS WONDERFUL.When you give your heart to a dog,you will always know love. They are always so glad to see you,to sit on your lap and loving you right back.

Our little Bisti will be gone soon and we will always have those wonderful memories.

Thanks, L

Welcome back. I loved the poem. We too have given our hearts to a little dog (now nine years old) we found shivering in a cage at the humane society. I was surprised at myself the other day when just the thought of losing her brought me to tears. She has added so much to our lives and we are the better for having her.
