The Mexican Solution / or Delusion

The way our current immigration laws are written and enforced, it is no wonder our border situation is a mess. We have no clear policy.

Then there is the Rule of Law. Important yes, but would you agree that bad laws, and bad policies, make criminals out of good people?

What I want to do is to get us to start looking at Mexico, and all of Americas a bit differently. I really think we have no choice. It is a dangerous world, sorry to tell you that, but it is. Bill Clinton saw to it that Chinese nuclear technology was advanced fifty years, and we have sent China billions, even trillions of dollars. Russia still has formidable military and lots of oil, and Arab countries are trying to get nuclear weapons. We send billions to the Middle East, and the European Union seeks to replace the USA as the worlds' economic super power.

We should be building strong friendship and alliances with everybody in the Americas. What is up with this attitude regarding Mexicans? My friend, seentomuch, asked if I'd have been to areas impacted by illegal immigration. Yes, I have, all over the West. Hundreds of thousands of miles worth.

The Mexican people are solid folks. I don't know what Mexican folks you are seeing. When I drive up to a construction site to unload building materials, and I see a Mexican lad on the forklift, I like it. I see a friendly face, and a guy who will have me unloaded in minutes, compared to hours it takes to get unloaded in Minnesota, or the eighteen hours it took to get loaded in inner city Chicago. Mexican warehouse people will load you first, then go eat. They will stay late and work extra to help you out. A union warehouseman in Chicago, will eat lunch, take a break, call his wife, visit the bathroom, begin to load you, take another break, then a shift change, and he goes home. Oh, he forgot to finish loading you?

When I go into a McDonald's and the crew is all Spanish speaking, I like it. The person at the counter will be friendly, and they will get my order done right and fast. Quite a different story at the McDonald's in Northern Idaho, a bunch of lazy kids were behind the counter, slow, silly kids.

As a nation, I think we are a bit arrogant regarding Mexico. Sure Mexico struggles with corrupt governments, but put Mexico in context of other nations around the Globe. Mexico does okay compared to much of Indonesia or Africa or Asia.

I think it is time to think boldly about Mexico. Why is it so far fetched to think that Mexico could be part of the United States? If not that, we should be much better friends. I have read about the Pioneer Spirit of Americans traveling West. I appreciate that Spirit. I see that same Spirit demonstrated by many Mexicans today.

I know what some of you are thinking. "Oh great, another fifty million Democrat voters". The Mexican and Latino people are not leftists. They are basically conservative folks, religious, hard working, easy going, and the only reason most Hispanics vote Democrat right now is because they think the Dems are the only ones who want to help them out. If there were no immigration issue, I think you'd find Hispanics voting to the right. Look at the Cubans living in South Florida. They frequently vote conservative.

The United States has natural ties to Mexico, Central and South America, and that tie is OUR Hispanic population, some sixty to seventy million strong, and growing. Our goofy laws, and our goofy enforcement caused this problem. We certainly cannot fault people who risk all to find a better life for themselves, and their loved ones. There are only a hundred and ten million folks in Mexico. It won't be long before there are more Mexicans in the USA than Mexico.

Mexico is a gold mine, and so is Central America, and sure we'd have some struggles with gangs, and bad guys, but we'll prevail.

That is were we would need to get tough with Mexico as well. You know, "make 'em an offer they can't refuse." The goal would be to be able to travel to Mexico, as easily as crossing from California to Arizona. I'd like to see folks from the USA moving to Mexico as well.

Mexico and southward are opportunities, and we should start looking at them that way. Before I go, can anyone tell exactly what our (the Obama Administration) policy towards Mexico and illegal immigration is?

I agree with your approach for the most part. And yes, I feel that the hispanic voters would tend to vote very conservative. 97.8% of Latin Americans are Catholic, thus would tend to vote republican.

And I do feel that Mexican people get a bad rap in general, but as a Mexican myself, let me tell you, we do not want to be too open to Latin America. Last year Caracas, Venezuela was voted to be the worst city in the world. And Mexico City's crime is horrendous. It would be great to act as some sort of beacon to Mexicanos looking for a better life, but openening up more to those obsurdly corrupt governments will help nothing.

Oh, and I know you mean well, but inferring that you would rather be waited on by a mexican than a white american is stereotyping. I know lazy mexicans, i know great mexicans. I know lazy white people, and i know great ones. You should not perfer to be served on by one over the other in a perfect world. But i know you meant well by that comment.

Thanks for reading. In my blog, the three mutts, I talk about the fact that my brothers and I are "racially challenged." I agree that I stereotyped a bit, but it was so much fun.

Sure, there are lazy folks everywhere, but I look at the sheer manufacturing output of Southern California. I don't think people realize just how much Los Angeles and Southern California mean to our economy nationwide. Look at Phoenix, right now, the nation's fifth, maybe fourth largest city. As with LA, Phoenix is beginning to become a manufacturing giant.

I have also met a number of very good hispanics, in fact, I have several dear friends that are hispanic. You are right in that there are a lot of very good hispanic people that would make a great addition to this country, or any country. But I worked for the department of corrections for 12 years in 3 different states, I have lived in Canyon City, Co. El Paso, Tx. Lexington, Ne. and Colorado Spgings, Co. I worked maximum security most of my career, and the majority of the hispanic population were gang banger, or wannabe gang bangers, and an overwhelming number of the high security population were hispanic. I have seen the crime rate in the cities where I have lived and been able to compare it to where I live now, I have researched the statistics through various sources, and I can tell you that the cities that I have lived in have a much higher crime rate than cities without a large hispanic population. I dont want to make anybody beleive that I think that hispanic people are bad. But at this point, in the cities that I have lived in, they have an overwhelming number of bad representatives. The majority of these people were brought up here and by unethical businesses that dont look into who they are hiring. I think you should have some idea who you are hiring regardless of ethnicity. These businesses just want warm, cheap bodies to throw on a manufacturing line. They dont care about the criminal background, or anything else. They dont care if they are poisoning the community around them. They have created a trusted pipeline to funnel drugs from Mexico into these communities. If we could do a background check before allowing anyone to immigrate north, that would be a different story. But just opening the border I think would be more trouble than it is worth.

I also believe that Lazy is Lazy, it doesnt matter where you are from. Many white folks are lazy because they have been spoiled, maybe they have never had to struggle. Take enough away from them and you would be surprised how ambitious they become.

I dont mind opening the border to the good, hard working people with a dream, but opening the border to everyone is a can of worms I would rather keep the lid on.

Seentoomuch,

It is quite evident that a high percentage of the prison system is hispanic. But this has nothing to do with race, it has to too with poverty and a lack of education. Poverty breeds poverty, and the only way out is education, that's why the government pours so much money into Lexington's school systems.

mccookreader,

I disagree, the educational level of the prison population in almost every state almost mirrors that of the same size population on the outside. The level of an individuals education, does not correlate with whether they will commit a felony or not. A large majority of the population in southwest Nebraska live below the national poverty line, and yet there is a relatively low crime rate.

The Hispanic prison population is mostly made up of gang bangers that are locked up for dealing drugs or attempting to kill each other for territory. They have the money to get educated if they want to. I have seen inmates with 100K or more in thier inmate accounts. You cant force education on them, they wouldnt take it, even if it was free. The prison system offers these inmates a chance to obtain a GED for free, and the opportunity to take that education a step further. They set them up with resources and housing and offer to get them started before release...they wont take it. Because they can make more money in a month of gang bangin and selling drugs than they can at a job, even if they had a bachelors degree.

I would agree that a good education increases the chance that any individual(regardless of race) will have a better self image, and have a higher degree of success and will be much less likely to commit a crime. But I worked maximum security, do you have any idea what you have to do to get locked up in max? Especially in Nebraska! I dont think that poverty would drive most of us to do these things.

I too, have seen Mexicans that are hard workers and make us proud to know them. But they need to also be proud and go through the proper channels and do the right thing to be citizens of our country.
