Discourse in AmericaPosted Sunday, August 16, 2009, at 2:01 PM
The politically middle of this country are surely scratching their heads at the moment. The extreme left and the extreme right have taken over the political environment in this country.
A few years ago the extreme right was adamant that anyone who protested against President Bush should be thrown in jail or kicked out of the country. Now, a lot of those same people are protesting themselves. I am all for protesting, it is an American tradition, dating all the way back to before the official formation of this country, with the Boston Tea Party, but I don't like the tactics the extreme right or left are taking. The extreme left would interrupt meetings screaming and yelling with signs until they were carted off by police. The extreme right interrupts meetings calling senators liars and shouting them down when they attempt to clarify their positions. The middle of the road people, however have got to be sitting around thinking (in the words of Green Bay great Vince Lombardi) "What the hell's going on out here!" The middle of the road person is a unique person. No matter how they view themselves (Democratic or Republican) they don't necessarily vote that way. These are the people that have been identified as Reagan Democrats or Obama Republicans. They vote their values and beliefs not the party line. But with the deep divisions in this country between the extreme right and left it is sometimes easy to forget that neither of these sides ever decide elections. They always vote their party no matter how much they may actually dislike their candidate. It's the middle of this country that always decides an election. This is why on both sides you may see an extreme right or extreme left candidate win their primary and then be roundly defeated in the general election. But, because of the nature of our news media and the 24/7 cycle the people who always get the coverage are the ones acting out the most. It will continue this way until journalism actually finds its way back into the media. It doesn't matter either which news channel you go to, be it Fox News or CNN or MSNBC they are going to attempt to cover news in a way they believe their viewers want them to. Conservative on Fox News, slightly Liberal on MSNBC, slightly to the left on CNN, it doesn't matter. We are in an era right now where true journalism has left the building and been replaced by sensationalism. But until the middle can actually take back control of politics fully expect both sides of the extremism to continue to rule the day. The major problem is that the extreme left thinks there is nothing they ever say that is wrong and the extreme right thinks the same of themselves. It's quite something to watch two people who think they are always right argue. Arguments tend to last a long time and neither side ever concedes. Consider me one of the people who used to be in the middle, but is sick and tired of seeing this country go to the fat cats and lobbyists.
If you sit around on your ass long enough, something will happen all right...something bad.
I think is was Reagan who said once in a speech, "all evil needs to succeed is for good men to do nothing."
I think we've seen enough evil. Politicians taking money for favors. Candidates turning their abcks on constituents for money. Taking power away from private citizens that stand their way to power and of course money. And who about their lies aimed aty scaring people to perpetuate their power.
Notice it didn't say anything about liberals. I said politicians. Think about that for minute Mike.
Justin that's what my blog was about there are problems on both sides of aisle. This isn't simply Liberal or Conservative.
Holy crap Mike, your right about something! Both sides! Mostly Lids, but both sides YES.
My son was being interviewed in San Francisco two weeks ago. He is an egyptology prodigy. He also knows every President front and back.
We were at the Tut exhibit and President Obama came up. The question was sort of "You are from Texas does that mean you support Obama?. My 8 year old said "no". He was asked "Why not?". My 8 year old replied "because he wants to make government great not Americans". Words from an 8 year old. I have been told it made the paper (San Fran Chronicle).
Mike you hit on a point as did my 8 year old. Republicans and Democrats believe government has a role. Libertarians believe government has no role. We just disagree on what that role really is. Most right wingers and not Republicans they are really Libertarians. Most left wingers are not Democrats they are Socialist or Communists.
Therefore, I believe most of us (70%) are within a few ticks of each other. The Socialists and Libertarians will never even come close to agreeing.
From that statement orville I will go ahead and assume that you are an extreme right person since you went right ahead and blamed most Lids (I assume, once again, you meant libs) for the problems.
Wall you have hit on a point that I have been making for years and that is the two-party system just doesn't work.
Thomas Jefferson envisioned the American political system as a system with no political parties what-so-ever. But that, unfortunately, is a pipe dream. As long as there is politics there will be parties.
One solution that I've always liked, especially for the presidency is to do away with the current system and let anyone that wants to run, regardless of party, run. The person that garners 50% of the vote is president. If no one reaches 50% you take the top two candidates and hold a run-off one month later.
But that too is a pipe dream, the Democratic and Republican Parties have a strong hold on the election process and they aren't going to let that go anytime soon.
No Mike, I'm not extreme anything. I'm an American citizen that is tired of the Government telling me what I can and can't do,is all.I for one,am tired of paying for stupid peoples mistakes. We need to cut the nuts off all the life member welfare DADS and give all the life member welfare MOMS hysterectomies. And stop the breeding of the GIVE ME GENERATION.Just might have a lot less crime and drug problem in the world. And as far as for Obama he's just a fall guy for the Democrats,Republicans,{CONGRESS}when all this crap don't work.Don't get me wrong we need some rules.I don't understand passing new laws, when they don't enforce the ones we already have.
To be a "moderate" is to be a hypocrite. They want to claim victory, that the "extremes" fought for, without engaging in the battle. They want to claim, they're better than us.
Stephanie,I am single.And from Obeyville.LOL
The tide may be turning.

Wow Chunky you truly hate anyone that is not in your extreme point of view.
Only the truly ignorant could extract hatred out of my comments.
Mike, your becoming predictable. Every time you lose an argument, you play the hatred card. What a pathetic loser you truly are.
At one time, I too lived in the decadent gray area. Not standing for anything, but trying to get along. After a series of failed relationships, business ventures, and failing at life in general, I needed a do over. Life is so much more enjoyable living in black and white. Before Mike start crying racism, I'm talking about right and wrong, no in between, or as the discussion calls it, moderation.
Sorry, chunky, my use of hate was out of bounds. I should have simply said you truly dislike anyone who isn't as far right as you were.
By the way at what point were we arguing and what argument did I lose? The only person who seems to be in a fight is you by using words such as "pathetic loser" and "ignorant". I believe you don't like civil discussions and truly let the ugly side of yourself out.
I don't believe there is such a thing as simple black and white to any issue, there are many shades of gray.
What exactly, if I may ask, is so wrong with trying to get along in peace? What is alien or unnatural about that concept that drives you to the point of calling people names for wanting that? If you want to live in a world where you see things in just black and white and that works for you, then I applaud you. But what makes you think you have the right to tell anyone else they are wrong for believing in gray areas? What gives you the right to belittle and insult people who believe life is easier with more choices than black and white?
But again, I apologize, I shouldn't have used the word "hate" to describe what I thought you were thinking. That was wrong of me.
Steffanie,
Your parents lost the moment you were born.
I can't believe how clueless you can be.
Steffanie ROCKS!!! She's probably the most hilarious chick I've ever read...next to Ann Coulter. She hits the nail on the head...like Sarah Palin and doesn't take anybody's crap.
Michael - is death a black or white issue? How about breathing? Try painting gray on being blind...or not.
Your beliefs are showing.
Actually Mickel there are many shades of gray of being blind. You can be legally blind and not be completely blind.
I stand by my original statement that ISSUES aren't simply black or white, I do not consider dying and breathing as issues, they are facts.
But as I said before this is what I believe in. If you choose to believe something different that is up to you and I applaud you for it.
Oh and thanks I'm glad my beliefs are showing, but I don't know what that has to do with anything.
