Fitness waters

Posted Monday, July 21, 2008, at 12:50 AM

We have all seen commercials and advertisements for the new "enhanced water beverages". Many of them claim to be full of energy, vitamins and nutrients, oxygen and above all, provide thirst quenching flavor. But do we really need to pay extra for these "super waters"?

The word "enhanced" can imply anything from flavored water to added oxygen to added nutrients. Keep in mind that many of the alleged benefits among the numerous "good-for-you" tonics on the market are simply selling ploys. For instance, is there really such a thing as super oxygenated water; a product that actually claims to have added oxygen levels, and as a result provides a boost of energy. Many scientists are calling this a sham. The amount of extra oxygen that can be dissolved into a 500ml bottle of water is approximately equal to one breath of fresh air; barely enough to even affect the simplest of workouts. Honestly, most of this oxygen escapes the bottle as soon as it is opened, and the stomach's rate of absorption is insignificant compared to the lungs. And, the amount of added nutrients in these "wonder waters" generally is less than would be gained from eating a healthy meal; leaving me to believe that these glorified glacier waters can be skipped.

If you do prefer the flavor of the "enhanced" water drinks, be weary of the amount of calories per serving in your beverage of choice. Look for lower calorie brands, with low amounts of sugar. Consider diluting the beverage with pure water for just a hint of flavor. Most importantly, do not neglect to drink on upwards of 8 glasses of water per day!
