DS WEEK - GTA Chinatown Wars and Pokemon Platinum

Posted Monday, March 16, 2009, at 11:39 AM

The Nintendo DS has been around for a couple years now and has made a huge mark on the handheld gaming business. The system itself is the best selling game console in history and still growing, which means that more people out there own a DS than any other gaming system. That's pretty huge for the game developers who want to put there game in front of as many potential buyers as possible. I've been fortunate to have a DS since the day it was launched and have enjoyed it countless hours. It makes waiting in line so much more interesting. My daughter is just turning 3 years old this month and we recently purchased a DS for her because of all the amazing games geared for the little ones. There is a Crayola game that allows her to pull up a picture and color it with the stylus (did I mention the DS has a touchscreen?). She loves it and I love not having to pick up all the crayons spread across the living room floor - or should I say my wife enjoys not cleaning up the crayons spread across the living room floor as anybody that knows me, knows that I tend to get preoccupied with other things and put off cleaning or just hope that she will get to it before I do. Anyways, the DS stands for Dual Screen and that's what it is. A dual-screen hand held gaming device that has a touchscreen for added game play value. It truly is a great gaming machine for young and old. Did I mention that the older folks are enjoying some of the games like New York Times Crosswords and Brain Age? So, remarkably the DS system appeals to all types of people. Do you have a DS? What do you think? What are your favorite games for the system? Have you played 'THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU'?

The DS is gonna have a huge week with two extremely high-profile releases that many people are looking forward to. Myself included.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: CHINATOWN WARS

This is the first Grand Theft Auto title available for the DS system and a remarkable first GTA for a Nintendo system. It's not watered down and has the firm MATURE rating just like all the other Grand Theft Auto games. It's going to be an interesting game to play on the DS system with the added ability of touchscreen controls. I was a fan of the GTA series on the PSP (Playstation Portable) and hope that the DS version is just as good or better. All signals point to amazing and I am extremely excited for the release on Tuesday, March 17th. Are you gonna get it? What are your thoughts?

Pokemon Platinum

Ever since the Pokemon games burst onto the scene with the original Gameboy, they have been hot titles. This one is more of the same and already has high pre-order numbers at Game On for a DS title. People are just excited as can be for this new release. It has a crazy release date of Sunday March 22nd, because Nintendo likes to screw up everybody's schedules. I have a feeling, a lot of people will be picking up this title Sunday and playing it most of the day. It's hard for me to describe or review a Pokemon game as I've never really liked them myself, but I am in the minority on this as they are the biggest selling games for the Gameboy and DS Systems. So, here's a description:

Following the vast popularity of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum is the newest in the core series of Pokémon games. Pokémon Platinum features a new story full of adventure, never-before-seen forms of powerful Pokémon -- including the legendary Giratina's Origin Forme -- and the Distortion World, a mysterious new world that suddenly appears in the Sinnoh region. In addition, with Pokémon Platinum up to 20 players can interact with other Pokémon fans from around the world in the new Wi-Fi Plaza, featuring mini-games and activities. Players can also enjoy the new features in the Global Terminal, such as posting battle videos using the new "Vs. Recorder." In addition, Pokémon Platinum features a new Battle Frontier, where the toughest Trainers can test their skills in new ways. Pokémon Platinum already has broken previous Nintendo DS sales records in Japan, selling more than 1 million copies in its first two days of release.

See that? Already breaking records in Japan. I wish we could get the games released at the same time in the US, but Japan tends to get all the games early from Nintendo. Oh well - less than a week to wait now, so I'll quit complaining. I am excited about this release, because I am going to finally try a DS Pokemon game. I have tried the Gameboy advance versions, but never a DS version, so this Sunday, I'll be sitting at Game On playing Pokemon Platinum. Come on out and give me tips and pointers if your a seasoned veteran of the Pokemon titles.

Both games are released this week at Game On on their respective dates. Call 308-345-8888 for more information.

I don't think I'll be getting Platinum. I enjoy Pokemon, but I have a bunch of other games that I "need" to play first, so logging in another 100+ hours with a new Pokemon game would be horrendous. I'll totally play you sometime, though, since I believe the Ds games have an option to balance the levels on both teams, allowing people to more easily play together.

GTA has never been a series that I've liked, though I kinda hope it does well, if only so that other developers will take Nintendo systems more seriously. Also, this isn't the first Nintendo GTA- the original GTA was ported to the Game Boy Color, if memory serves.

Also, yes, people should definitely get The World Ends With You. The DS has an excellent and really varied library of games but this game stands out among the games enjoyed more by "traditional" gamers. It's also one of the games that takes the most advantage of the touch screen for regular gameplay.
